Love it!

Big fan of the older britcoms.
And the LORD spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin, then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.

I am an evil giraffe, and I shall eat more leaves from this tree than perhaps I should, so that other giraffes may die.

if you are after some laughs, try some of these out. some will confuse you, some you wont 'get', some wont make you laugh, but theres bound to be a few gems youve never come across

green room

the league of gentlemen

big train

spaced

little britain

i'm alan partridge

trigger happy tv

peep show

that peter kay thing

phoenix nights

armstrong and miller

miranda

al murray, the pub landlord

there are squillions more to choose from

but i digress!

I loved it when Cleese (Fawlty)'s car stalled and he got out, grabbed a small branch that had fallen from a nearby tree, and started beating the car with it.

but his character quickly became predicable. there wasnt much to believe about his character, especially the way he would just keep digging himself in to a deeper and deeper hole. just didnt come across as credible, or likeable for that matter. i could fully sympathise with sybil, who was several times more intelligent and competent than him

1dunno1

theres a ton of far more funny and clever stuff out there. times have moved on since fawlty towers and benny hill

i was just trying to think of the last time i laughed out load at a comedy. the other night i was watching an episode of 'friday night dinner', and a few days before that i caught a repeat of an episode of 'green room'

funny, clever stuff! although obv, each to their own!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25816768

You are right, of course. And Fawlty Towers is definitely dated -- way to racey for todays tastes. But its scripts were a winner while it lasted. Another oldey I liked was Mr PrimeMinister. And I esp liked the uncanned laughter -- they didnt need it. Does the UK have laws against canned laughter?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27142624

oh, yes prime minister is good, and very insightful as to the machinations of the civil service!

i dont think we have laws regarding canned laughter, we just dont really use it, not sure we like it really

'the royle family' is hilarious but theres no laughter, no live audience. just you and the tv
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25816768

Ah right, YES Prime Minister. Of course...

One critique though was when they brought in the female Thatcherite advisor to counter Sir Humphrey. Distasteful IMO. It was better with more intl themes (sucking up to the Americans, Trident, Soviets) and less overtly parochial and pro Thatcher..
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27142624

i think i was too young to watch/appreciate it when it was first running. when i catch it again, ill look for your observations. cheers!

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25778304

^ This.

clappa

Sublimely funny.

Father Ted too, although strictly speaking was written by Irish men with an Irish cast, but produced for British television.

Alan Partridge (any series!)
Only Fools and Horses
Red Dwarf
The IT Crowd
Keeping Up Appearances
Dad's Army
Vic Reeves Big Night Out / The Smell of Reeves & Mortimer / Bang Bang (though mmmm maybe technically not sitcoms)
Green Wing
The Office
The Vicar of Dibley
One Foot In The Grave
The Fall & Rise of Reginald Perrin / Rising Damp (tho after recent revelations I'm re-evaluating this choice)
The Royle Family
Coupling
The Fast Show / Absolutely (ok, i'm cheating they are sketch shows, but probably as good a sketch show as you'll ever find)
The Inbetweeners

Our comedy output has really declined in the last few years though, very little I find worth watching these days, let alone anything that might be deemed as classic like Fawlty Towers or any of the above.

Maybe we're just not funny any more, or maybe its all this reality tv / phone vote crap that we're plagued with.

(Manuel outside Fawlty's office door)

"Is my birthday" (Man)

"Yes?" (Bas)

"Since a coming here from my 5 sisters and " (Man)

"Wait a moment please" *pushes Manuel outside the office and closes the door* (Bas)

Manuel just looks around and then goes to reading his paper again...

"Since a coming here from my 5 sisters and " (Man)

Then Basil comes to the door, opens it and just rips up the sheet Manuel is reading from.

Yes, yes, yes...that was well replayed. I remember the scene well. LOL!!!!!

And, of course, all of the scenes where Basil slaps Manuel on the back of the head, sometimes with the camera going dark before you see the actual hit, but with the audio still going, so you can hear it, and hear Manuel's resultant shriek. ROFL!!!!!
