It's not a bad idea as long as you have safe harbor nearby.. The seas can get dangerously rough very quickly if you're in the wrong place at the wrong time.

3-7k is off base for a good blue water sail boat. Unless it's tiny and you luck out on the price. I didn't look at the listing but there are a hundred small issues with saltwater boats that a newb wouldn't know about. That being said, it's not a horrible idea and is being done as we speak by like minded individuals.
