Fruitcake soaked in rum, wrapped with a rum soaked cheesecloth and sealed in a tin. Will last for years and is very filling. Be sure to use a trail mix or something that people enjoy eating.

There's a definite joke in here somewhere...a perfect food for doom = fruitcake!

I don't know about standard fruitcakes, but I do believe in theory that the idea of a fruitcake is a very sound SHTF food source. If one added nuts(protein and fat), raisins(simple carbs), other protein sources like protein powder, don't know if it loses it's value when cooked or not, then yes, you could create a really dense food like hardtack.

Personally I'd be very interested if anyone found a good recipe, because I like to cook, but I loathe fruitcake. I've though of creating several batches to see if I can find something more palatable.

Seems like you should use whole wheat, but of course some will argue not to for the anti-gluten folks and the fact that there's a lot of GMO wheat now. I'm guessing that steel rolled oats would make it tasty too. I've actually thought of making something more like a spiced oatmeal cookie/cake to see if it would work, and most people like spiced oatmeal cake.

Perhaps the high ratio of rum to the recipe tends to kills molds. I don't know. Of course any rum added before cooking will destroy the ethanol and leave only flavoring, so I'd guess that usually like a good rum cake, the ethanol is added last after it cools.

Truthfully, one of the major issues is getting enough calories and sweets don't usually last other than dehydrating fruits. This makes having an altered fruitcake around a welcome treat.

Yes, "Doomcake" just for GLP'ers. The key point is to soak the cake in liquor and wrap well. The other key point is the heartiness of the ingredients. Some fruitcake recipes call for only enough flour and butter to bind the ingredients, while some are more a cake with some added stuff. One can even purchase a fruitcake and preserve it with liquor.

If you don't like the alcohol, reheat the slice before eating.

There are just too many and varied recipes to tout one over another.

Also, since no one here really likes fruitcake that much it will stay in the pantry until ones get hungry enough that it starts to look good.
