But this election paralleled the Carter-Reagan election in so many ways, the phony polls. I don't understand why or how Romnet lost.

Romney's lead in the polls never really went beyond the standard margin of error (plus or minus 3%) and was never across the board i.e. not all the polls showed Romney leading the final few weeks. In theory Romney could have held an average 6% lead throughout the entire campaign and lost in a dead heat while still remaining within the margin of error as far as polls go. Which I guess is what happened to Carter, except that turned out to be an electoral landslide instead.
