Well at least I live in Texas where Obama and his policies really haven't affected the state and I can laugh at the blue states that keep going broke under his policies.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 11518748

It is imprudent to laugh at them.

But let us use this opportunity to teach them.

What others are calling harshness is simply the reality of our lands.

Any of us would give a beggar a meal.

But once that beggar curses us... he needs to go elsewhere.

Re: Someone please get me out of Blue State NY!
Asking people to help you out of a blue state... is a very blue state sort of a thing to do.

When you make up your mind to take charge of the situation and you make it happen to get your family to a red state... that is a very red state sort of a thing to do.

Make it happen!
 Quoting: goodmockingbird

This is 100% wrong.

Asking for help, or more precisely, demanding help, from the government is a very blue state thing to do.

Asking your community of fellow men for help, while having a reasonable and unspoken expectation that the community will rally to help, as you would rally to help another, is a very red state things to do.

In short, OP is doing exactly the right thing, and your pompous response is 100% wrong.

Alas, OP, I live in NY too.
 Quoting: CrazyEyesThreadKilla

And your thinking is colored by your geographic milieu.

Traditionalist conservative red state thinking is to ask for advice on how to improve one's own circumstances.

Asking for advice honors and elevates the one you are asking for the advice from. Asking for advice shows both respect and self-respect.

Asking for money is considered dishonorable.

One should exhaust all other options, such as asking for practical advice(!), before asking for money.

And then you for dang sure don't curse someone who could help you with practical advice.

Why so much hate for the OP? This is a person with legitimate claims. There is enough on this planet for everyone. NO ONE, American or otherwise need suffer any longer.

Demand Access to Free clean Sustainable energy! It exists! I assure you!

IT IS POSSIBLE to run our future on sunshine happiness and farts! Seriously! Not trolling here, it's main issue, the allocation, squandering and restricted acess to our planets resources by greedy men attempting to control their monopoly on the entire fucking race will be our doom.

SPEAK UP MOTHERFUCKERS AND LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR

If I was religious I'd say, God bless You OP

But I'm not relgious, I'm rational. May you find your way, I have no financial means of helping, only positive though and reconfirmation that the world DOES care about your problems. But it is true you must accept what you have only, and help yourself.

Re: Someone please get me out of Blue State NY!
I agree that people are being a little harsh here.

Have any of you had to care for an elderly parent? ..and work a job on top of it, too? It's not only physically draining, but emotionally draining.

What I hear is desperation. I think there is a difference between whining and asking for handouts and desperation. This woman is obviously not unwilling to work, and she doesn't sound like one of those people buying Flat screen TV's with Katrina money.

It's not easy to just pick up and move. It takes a chunk of money to do so... especially if you have people who are dependent on you. If the person is only responsible for themselves, they might be able to get in their car and drive and live in their car and eat peanut butter, but with elderly parents? No...and how can you 'get ahead' to save money if you are living paycheck to paycheck?

Add to that, that it's almost impossible to get a place to live unless you have a job. It's hard to get a job unless you have an address. You can get a driver's license in a new state unless you have an address, and it's hard to get a job unless you have a local driver's license. Been there, done that.

I didn't take it as OP asking for a handout. I took it as asking for someone to just give her a break...something that would help her make the move and start anew.

Haven't any of you ever gone looking for a job, knowing you are a quality employee and wishing someone would just give you a break and take a chance on you. All you needed was a chance.

Just my two cents, FWIW.

Saying a prayer for you, OP.hf

Stop your whining. Do you have any idea how many people in other countries would love to have the opportunity to live where you live and enjoy the freedoms that you enjoy?

I hate Obama, but you do realize many blue states are doing just fine? Most of them rank at the top of the list for income level, education level, heathcare access, etc. And outside of DFW, Houston, Austin, and one or two other places, Texas is in bad shape. Most of rural Texas like most of rural America is on life support.

You said you owned your own home......Can you sell it and move into a smaller place. Or is that not feasible?

Are you a member of a church......Maybe they can help, with finding a job. Even if it means working at McDonald's. Its better than nothing. They may even know of a organization that can help you get support with taking care of the two elderly people.

It can take months to move. You have to have a job waiting for you in the state you want to relocate to. You have to sell your home and find a new one......Lots and lots of work and searching involved.

Perhaps someone on here who is a financial adviser (in Austin, maybe?) could arrange to contact her privately.

Metro NYC is doing OK economically, although it is of course an expensive place to live. Rural upstate NY and all the small cities like Buffalo, Rochester, etc., are fucked. This is true. This is true across America, even in Texas. A handful of big metro areas are doing OK, many/most small cities and rural areas are hurting badly. There are pockets here and there that are doing OK like the Dakotas.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 26915656

dunno

I'm part portuguese, always considered myself white and never took advantage of any programs for "hispanics" because I never thought I was one

but my parents were university grads and professionals, we never thought of ourselves as needy. I went to good schools here, have no accent, dress professionally, want the same things everyone else wants and am willing to work for them

I guess it's a question of how and where you're raised.

In my house it would have been really embarassing to think of yourself as a sub group who needed government help...but in other communities that kind of thinking was encouraged...

one problem I did run into was that even though I never thought of myself as anything but 100% mainstream american, I would run into americans who made a point of identifying me as different, as a minority and latin...and they wouldn't let it go even when I told them that isn't who I was

in that case, the problem is with some Americans who have a nationality issue, not with me

Re: Someone please get me out of Blue State NY!
The only thing keeping us afloat is my husband's established small (HVAC, on the those have to have services in the NE) business in rural NY. We struggle month to month, but are still doing better than so many .... Unfortunately, NY's current taxation has not only decimated his business, we cannot afford to hire any employees due to the cost of workman's comp etc here in NY. Taxes on a INC business are INSANE even if owner operated. NY is a terrible place to work, live, buy and own a home or business period.

We would prefer to move, even just to NH, but unfortunately we do not have enough savings, nor working years left to re-establish somewhere else.

Also, like the OP we both have elderly parents, that have a way to go .... we will, and are their primary caregivers as what they have worked for all their lives to keep their independence, is gone.

It's life, it's reality, people need to find happiness and contentment in the here and now, even in poverty. It is what it is, the "American Dream", whatever that was, is dead. But no one, no government, can change your "state of being" unless you allow them to.

No, "metro NYC" is not doing fine. It's bene completely destroyed by a hurricane and there are no jobs anywhere, and haven't been for a very long time. I was reading about how staten island (worst hit by the storm) used to have only 10,000 people on public assistance (in various forms) out of its 500,000 population, that number has skyrocketed to 45,000 IN ONE YEAR.

I don't know what you think is going on in NYC, but I'l telling you things are very, very bad here economically.

*also:

I mention staten island becuase it is one of the richest boro's with the median household income being $65,000 and up a year, with most people owning 2 cars and have nearly unlimited money to piss away on stupid shit. These are not traditionally poor people by any means, but they're all going broke at an incredible rate because there are no jobs anywhere. And if they have a job, they have no hours.

Again, things are very bad in the city.

Sounds like she didn't vote for the O, and I didn't see a request for financial assistance there either. Just a request for help.

I've lived in the midwest, and the people didn't seem any more self-reliant there than on the coasts. Granted I haven't made a living from the land. But something about New Yorkers that you should understand, we don't pat ourselves on the back and pretty up what we say. People say New Yorkers are impolite, but if you're in NYC and ask for directions, either the person will say they don't know or will give you honest directions. That is not true in a lot of places, where people smile and under the surface are trying to screw you over.

OP, please ignore that asshole preaching at you about how to be a midwestern woman or whatever it is. They're not all like that there, she's probably just feeling the angst many of us feel that the Resident will be with us 4 more years.

It's also being destroyed by Dodd-Frank, which is strangling the banking business. Not killing the banks outright, just slowly strangling them. Banks are evil, right? Well right or wrong, they are the mainstay of the NYC economy and they "do" provide funding for startup and expanding businesses across the country. Well make that "did" -- they can't take risk any more. If they give you a loan, they now have to hold a shitload of risk-free "capital" against the possibility you won't pay it back. Better to deposit that money at the Fed and earn a risk-free 1.5% or whatever on it.

And if a bank won't give loans, that means a lot of people don't start businesses. OP may have been hoping for relief from Dodd-Frank under Romney's leadership.Does the US have another model of business formation? Folks like Mitt Romney (private equity) aren't lending much any more either. We're just spiraling down the drain; that's the "change" we'll see more of now.

Seriously wtf is a red state going to do to fix your situation.

At least in the State of NY you have access to some of the best doctors in the world.

You have access to some of the best jobs in the country.

You have access to more modern roadways/railways/infrastructure.

You have some of the best schools in the country.

Seems like another repub who's feelings are hurt.
So what do you do, you come crying to anyone who will listen and looking for a hand-out.

Seriously, where else would you go that can give you all the things NY has to offer.

Just because Obama wins the nation doesn't mean he owns the state.

Get off of your ass and get involved in local politics and change it, that is the beauty of america, and the beauty of a state like NY. If you have realistic aspirations and set forth to change what is broken, people will vote for you.

Sounds to me like you are looking at things through shit colored glasses.

It's beautiful I'll give you that (at least in the rural areas).
But in the rural areas there are no jobs, many of the schools are considered "in need" with a less than 70% graduation rate.
NYS is staunchly Democratic, so yes Obama owns it.
Doesn't sound like she's got a lot of free time to be dealing with a bunch of good old boy politicians much less our "helpful" NYC partimers and their BS either.
There is no work, because NYS regulates and taxes businesses into bankruptcy.
Rents, real estate tax, sales tax, home sales are beyond the reach of median wage earners .... where in NY or you talking about ??? Any links ???

There was a time when we NYers used to call MASS, "Taxachussetts". I haven't heard that reference in the last 25-30 years, now those of us that live near the border flock to MASS to buy our gas, clothing and food in order to avoid insane NY tax.

No disrespect but this simply is not true.
