This is one race that I was following closely. Look like those bastards at Monsanto won.

This one is a tough loss and affects everyone who cares about what they eat.

The same people who want condoms in porn.

I would have thought that if you wanted one for health reasons you'd want the other too.

But there you go, some people don't seem to bothered about what's in their food.

I was confused as to who would vote NO on something like this until I read the Con argument on the voter guide:

"Prop. 37 is a deceptive, deeply flawed food labeling scheme, full of special-interest exemptions and loopholes. Prop. 37 would: create new government bureaucracy costing taxpayers millions, authorize expensive shakedown lawsuits against farmers and small businesses, and increase family grocery bills by hundreds of dollars per year."

That would scare the average person away :(

Look at the description on the ballot and you will realize why:

[link to vote.sos.ca.gov]
PROP
37
GENETICALLY ENGINEERED FOODS.
LABELING. INITIATIVE STATUTE.
SUMMARY
Put on the Ballot by Petition Signatures

Requires labeling of food sold to consumers made from plants or animals with genetic material changed in specified ways. Prohibits marketing such food, or other processed food, as "natural." Provides exemptions. Fiscal Impact: Increased annual state costs from a few hundred thousand dollars to over $1 million to regulate the labeling of genetically engineered foods. Additional, but likely not significant, governmental costs to address violations under the measure.
WHAT YOUR VOTE MEANS

YES A YES vote on this measure means: Genetically engineered foods sold in California would have to be specifically labeled as being genetically engineered.

NO A NO vote on this measure means: Genetically engineered foods sold in California would continue not to have specific labeling requirements.
ARGUMENTS

PRO Proposition 37 gives us the right to know what is in the food we eat and feed to our families. It simply requires labeling of food produced using genetic engineering, so we can choose whether to buy those products or not. We have a right to know.

CON Prop. 37 is a deceptive, deeply flawed food labeling scheme, full of special-interest exemptions and loopholes. Prop. 37 would: create new government bureaucracy costing taxpayers millions, authorize expensive shakedown lawsuits against farmers and small businesses, and increase family grocery bills by hundreds of dollars per year.

Would you vote yes on this if you are first hearing about GMOs?

Where is the truth stated on the PRO side?

They can't claim that GMOs are harmful because technically there is no accepted research study that proves this.

So what you are left with a is a weak argument for it on the ballot itself... and people that are not very familiar with the issue have mostly been exposed to the campaign against it through ads and mailers.

We are lucky it did as well as it has. I have been keeping an eye on the yes percentage and it rose a few points since it was at 50% reporting but now it's dead not gonna go up anymore significantly.

The thing is the Europeans KNEW that they wanted the choice to choose what they eat so GMO is now clearly labelled (and avoided by most).

It isn't about who's right and who's wrong, it's about being labelled anyway so people can choose which they want to eat.

California ballot measure that would have required labeling of genetically engineered foods, are attributing Tuesday's narrow defeat to corporate dollars and deception...
