Sometimes I feel bad for Americans who've lived for several generations inland in rural areas. Some of what is perceived by some as hate or xenophobia with regard to race, religion, and politics is, in my opinion, like a dog who fear bites. The biting dog seems a purely mean, aggressive animal. In reality, its biting is droven by fear. That's how it manifests. And as these people continue be feel intimidated by the fast changing culture at the coast, a fear of change sets in, and they remain where they are and "double down" on their safe, comfortable traditions (ex: Evangelicals going, imo, overboard on many issues in the name of conservative tradition), and they raise their kids in the same atmosphere, so the cycle perpetuates. I think some of the people in that 8 minute video of Romney supporters in Ohio being interviewed are an example of that fear of the new, the different, and it can manifest in anger, hate, and apathy.
