In a way there already is a de facto assault weapons ban in place. For one thing full-auto rifles are illegal without extra money and scrutiny. Second is the general cost/liability associated with ownership of such a rifle, not to mention ammunition etc. In the USA you can get a semi-auto AK type rifle for $250-$350 maybe a little less. Plus a little more for ammo, and you could guess at say $300 to get armed with an albeit neutered gun.

Of course if you want a 'real' assault rifle with select-fire, grenade launcher etc. you are looking at thousands of dollars.

If there were no regulations in place AK type rifles could be produced domestically for practically nothing. They could be sold new for ~$50 and there would be plenty of room for profit.

There are also some hundreds of thousands of M1 carbine rifles and nearly a hundred thousand M14 rifles that were given to the Koreans who now want to sell them back to Americans because we are the largest market for those sorts of guns. These 'imports' are being blocked by the current administration because this would crash the market and make these wonderfully powerful items cheap cheap cheap. You would probably be able to get M1 carbines @ $100 by the case.

Doubt I would be able to collect either as I too am the wrong color and a citizen LOL. Well, I do happen to live somewhere pretty and my home is of decent size ... time to start up the garden again.
