My employer is a great guy, gives me 37 to 40 hours at least and isn't talking about reducing hours and pay because someone who didn't have healthcare now has it. This is just more scaremongering from a few businesspeople on the right. Plain and simple.

People shouldn't have to work more than 30 hours a week anyway. Life is much too short to put up with that crap.

Let's be honest, you'll never go to 30 hours a week per employee, you'd never make any money. I know, cause I use to own a business myself! Unless you're sending jobs to China to save on labor, good luck with that. It's time to end the scare tactics.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 18718744

Why do you say that? Where I work I'm a part-time manager and guaranteed 25-30 hours, but the regular employees are only guaranteed 4 hours week (though they may get more), and it's been this way since the recession hit....last year where their highest revenue ever with a 12% increase. Many companies are already doing what he's talking about, no reason not to think the trend will continue.

It's funny how short sighted people are.

Companies aren't going to pay this bill. They will just lower the hours of employees under the limit so they are exempt from Obama's slacker tax. We will become a part time nation which will probably be the death blow to our economy. 30 hours a week max as an employee. If you want 40 hours a week you'll have to juggle two jobs.

It's gonna be hilarious. As a business owner I am definitely going underground. All my employees are going to 30 hours. Screw it. I'll dissolve my company before I pay that commie shit. And most business owners I know feel the same.

Obama will just pass laws to make it nearly impossible to do that. He will pass stiff penalties if that is the game they want to play.

OP it sounds like you are part of the problem and not part of the solution.

Personally I'd love a 30 hour work week where I could have a better work-life balance rather than being a corporate slave 40+ hours a week.
 Quoting: Mr. E 5439566

Why don't you go to your boss then and tell him/her that you want to give up your health coverage, and go part time down to a 30 hour week. I guarantee you they'll do it.

I own a business too. I put my house and all my assets on the line with the bank to establish the cash line of credit to get the business going. My wife and I risked everything we have to get going. I now employ 42 people. None of them would risk shit to start their own business. But they think nothing of trying to tell me how to run mine.

It's people like YOU who are just as much the problem....the ones who think they are entitled to a job, entitled to the same pay and benefits of the ones who risked everything to build it.

This healthcare law, best as we can tell, is going to cost my company an additional 68,000 dollars next year. That's a lot. That's two more people I could have employed if you want to look at it that way. I'm near retirement. I think every day about selling out. The only reason I don't yet is becuase I have 42 people counting on me for ther families and livelyhood.

Fuck you chum.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1526405

Why not start looking now for someone who will buy your business and keep your employees on.

I work 20h a week AND I have free health care. Sweden rules.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2552763

Well, you do pay for it through taxes but at least it is not tied to employment. And this is how it should be. I would gladly pay more in taxes to know that if I was not employed that I would still have heath care. And then people can switch jobs when they want(or not work) and know that there will be no problem with getting healthcare. Too many people work a sucky job just so they can get healthcare and that is no life.

You prolly pay your employees as little as humanly possible too huh? That's why paying for healthcare would just break you. Just give up and go survive off the money your mommy and daddy prolly gave you to start your business, or if by some miracle you did it on your own, you can just take your savings and live off that till you go broke and have to be on welfare.

When Austrian economics talks about people taking their money and shutting down operations because of regulations, it's talking about millionaires and billionaires, most people can't afford to shut down their business because they don't like legislation that gets passed.

Btw you sound like a dick head boss.

You guys have no idea the shit a Marxist country is.

Here in Brazil, it is almost impossible to open a small business. Taxes, bureaucracy, regulations.

We pay 40% in taxes, most of them hidden in the price of rice and beans, for example. A cheap car costs US$ 40K (Civic).

Government has become huge, and all promotions and raises are based on political standing. Huge corruption, the capitalists with ties to the government are getting richer and richer like in China.

Try to get a medical appointment in the government medical system: 3 months for a consultation, one year for surgery. Pray that you don't die. Everybody buys private insurance if they can.

Obama will destroy America. Wait and see.

Are you guys even reading the post? People WANT/NEED to work full time, but can't. Most of the jobs lost in the recession were full-time high wage jobs, nearly ALL of the jobs created this year (in the private sector), are low wage Part-time jobs.

Here in Czech I do... stealing US jobs since 2000.

I can easily go with 20 hrs a week while I have a 40 hr contract. My (US) employer doesn't really check on me as long as the job gets done.

Healthcare is free (in tax and pay) so I actually have no clue how much I pay, just know I never payed cash anywhere.

It's amazing to see how people from the US HAVE to work 60< hours to get by. I truly believe that you're standards have reached madness in terms of needing the latest I-phone, plasma etc.

I CANNOT believe that you with your dirt cheap gas, free refills and clothes are poor.

Most of you are so spoiled that you wouldn't even survive a day in Eastern Europe.. While having lived in the US myself I know it beats the US any day.

Ive worked my ass off for thirty years to get where I am today and Im not sharing 25% of my profits. Im already taxed to death here in Ohio. I'd love to have a job where I only work 30 hours a week. All the jobs that are available that are in the professional realm are only 40+ though. I need better work/like balance. I'd be happy to take a cut and pay at my current job and current pay rate and only work 30 hours a week. That would mean I'd work 25% fewer hours a week so I'd expect my same salary reduced by 25%.

You will see a lot of companies making the employees go to the status of "private contractor" or lose their jobs. That happened to me at a former job. We were all regular hourly employees, with a paid vacation, but no insurance. One day, the boss came in and announced that we had to sign a paper saying we were private contractors, or we would lose our jobs. As a single Mom with 3 kids at the time, I desperately needed my job. Every employee signed the paper. A couple of years later, EVERYONE lost their job when the boss closed the place.
