If they didn't have to supply health insurance would it not be more beneficial for employers to hire people already covered by somebody elses insurance policy? |

The difference between what I charge my IC for merchandise and the invoice cost given my contracted customers becomes their "gross pay." I refer to this amount as "reimbursement for overpayment." It is on the checks for all 43 of my IC's. You are correct, this will be the model moving forward for me too. I run 45 employees and 15 contractors in the technology services area. I will be moving to less employees and more contractors because of all the government forms and taxes you have to do for employees. When you are a contractor in IT consulting, you are 1099 and own everything. income tax and healthcare. Makes my bookkeeping cleaner. And, when a project ends. I don't have to carry them on the bench either. Cut. IT is one of the few areas that you can get away with that...Big Brother is very strict about who can and cannot be a 1099. Believe me, we've gotten in big trouble trying to list a 1099 when they should have been W-2. |

My insurance has a working spouse fee, if my spouse opts out of insurance at work and is insured on my policy I pay $200 per month more, however if spouse is insured at work there is no additional fee to have my policy as secondary coverage. I don't know if that's the same everywhere. |

You don't have to take it. And you will pay the full premium, so it doesn't matter to them if you take it or not. And they have to make it "affordable". So the solution will be for companies to have two options. One will be a crap policy with a super high deductable that doesn't cover anything. That one will be "affordable". Then they will offer a decent policy (like we are used to now) and that one will cost you an arm and a leg and your first born son. |

Both because the American way of life causes sickness (lax regulations on chemicals, fast food full of additives and little nutrition, streets with no sidewalks and other things that make us rely on cars rather than walking,and on and on) One of the things we produce in this country is unhealthy people. Some are willing to let sick people suffer unaided, but most are not. The best case as it now stands is that everyone hires a healthcare insurer. But that is far from the actual case. More than half of the people have no healthcare insurance. They still get sick, though. And they are treated in emergency rooms and at government expense. Because the people who actually come face to face with others who are in crisis and suffering, can not push them out the door and let them die in the street. Our taxes go to helping them. So the American people are paying to look after those with no healthcare. In other words, we are already paying for insurance for the uninsured. Business owners who don't provide insurance for their employees just pass it on to the people in general. They complain about having to provide group insurance for their workers, but they end up paying for heathcare for the uninsured anyway through use of their taxes, unless they find ways to avoid taxes and then they pass the bill on to others. The bottom line is, we are as strong in this country as our weakest link. You can try to avoid this, but it comes out in social unstability, and environment of deprivation and despair. You may think you and yours are okay because you are insulated from it. But it doesn't go away. It gets worse. You may think you can stay clear of it, but your children, your grandchildren may not be as wily as you, and you will be handing them a world where they HAVE to maintain the level of priviledge for themselves that you have established for yourself or else become a part of the vast unpriviledged. Your personal legacy will only last a generation or two and then will be up to your descendents. It is for your own good and the good of your descendants that we solve large social problems and create a kinder, safer world. The need for health care is there. It's not like you can imagine it away. We should all be figuring out how we can meet it rather than trying to shove it off on others. |
