I agree this is what will happen as I see something else they have been doing: 1099 for full time.

I and many others I know are 1099 for long term. that means no SS, unemployment, and other payroll issues.

if you want a job in Florida on the lower end of the wage scale that is one way to lesson your cost so they are doing it though it is a form of tax evasion.

Take it or starve.

That is an illegal tactic that too many employers use. If you as an employer provide the items and equipment to do the job, set the hours of work and tell how the job will be performed you have hired an employee, not a contractor.

It's funny how short sighted people are.

Companies aren't going to pay this bill. They will just lower the hours of employees under the limit so they are exempt from Obama's slacker tax. We will become a part time nation which will probably be the death blow to our economy. 30 hours a week max as an employee. If you want 40 hours a week you'll have to juggle two jobs.

It's gonna be hilarious. As a business owner I am definitely going underground. All my employees are going to 30 hours. Screw it. I'll dissolve my company before I pay that commie shit. And most business owners I know feel the same.

OP it sounds like you are part of the problem and not part of the solution.

Personally I'd love a 30 hour work week where I could have a better work-life balance rather than being a corporate slave 40+ hours a week.
 Quoting: Mr. E 5439566

Why don't you go to your boss then and tell him/her that you want to give up your health coverage, and go part time down to a 30 hour week. I guarantee you they'll do it.

I own a business too. I put my house and all my assets on the line with the bank to establish the cash line of credit to get the business going. My wife and I risked everything we have to get going. I now employ 42 people. None of them would risk shit to start their own business. But they think nothing of trying to tell me how to run mine.

It's people like YOU who are just as much the problem....the ones who think they are entitled to a job, entitled to the same pay and benefits of the ones who risked everything to build it.

This healthcare law, best as we can tell, is going to cost my company an additional 68,000 dollars next year. That's a lot. That's two more people I could have employed if you want to look at it that way. I'm near retirement. I think every day about selling out. The only reason I don't yet is becuase I have 42 people counting on me for ther families and livelyhood.

Fuck you chum.

I recently got a job at a steel casting foundry in Wa state and they made all the new hires sign a paper that they agreed that they were 30 hour a week employees. You would get 40+ hours a week if you signed the paper and only 30 if you refused.

So I have always wondered why is health insurance so damn expensive anyway? Wouldn't it have been better to reform the insurance industry and stop the price gouging from hospitals rather than forcing people to literally work themselves to death? What an oxymoron work yourself sick so you can have healthcare, backwards thinking.

Read it your self. This is structured so that after a "few" years the fines companies would pay are LESS than the costs to insure their employees.

I run my business without employees. I hire independent contractors(IC) and "sell" them the merchandise the deliver to my contracted customers. As payment for product I accept the invoices they generate at point of sale. The difference between what I charge my IC for merchandise and the invoice cost given my contracted customers becomes their "gross pay." I refer to this amount as "reimbursement for overpayment." It is on the checks for all 43 of my IC's.
 Quoting: IIIIIth

You are correct, this will be the model moving forward for me too. I run 45 employees and 15 contractors in the technology services area. I will be moving to less employees and more contractors because of all the government forms and taxes you have to do for employees.

When you are a contractor in IT consulting, you are 1099 and own everything. income tax and healthcare.

Makes my bookkeeping cleaner.

And, when a project ends. I don't have to carry them on the bench either. Cut.

 Quoting: TripleH

IT is one of the few areas that you can get away with that...Big Brother is very strict about who can and cannot be a 1099. Believe me, we've gotten in big trouble trying to list a 1099 when they should have been W-2.

Wait till you see when the large DOD centric corporations (especially the DoD funding suckers) have in stored. Congress is going to have a sequestration and all these major employers are going to have massive lay-offs that will rock this country's economy. Not saying it's a bad thing as this country is to dependent upon Uncle Sam's war machine, but it was one of the issues that Obamma and his minions swept under the rug during this re-elction. That's when the real fun starts....plus the bread lines.

They have to make it "available". You don't have to take it. And you will pay the full premium, so it doesn't matter to them if you take it or not. And they have to make it "affordable". So the solution will be for companies to have two options. One will be a crap policy with a super high deductable that doesn't cover anything. That one will be "affordable". Then they will offer a decent policy (like we are used to now) and that one will cost you an arm and a leg and your first born son.

Re: Goodbye free health care, hello 30 hour work week
THe issue is really, finding the most efficient way to meet a need.

People need healthcare. Both because the American way of life causes sickness (lax regulations on chemicals, fast food full of additives and little nutrition, streets with no sidewalks and other things that make us rely on cars rather than walking, and on and on)

One of the things we produce in this country is unhealthy people.

Some are willing to let sick people suffer unaided, but most are not.

The best case as it now stands is that everyone hires a healthcare insurer. But that is far from the actual case. More than half of the people have no healthcare insurance.

They still get sick, though. And they are treated in emergency rooms and at government expense. Because the people who actually come face to face with others who are in crisis and suffering, can not push them out the door and let them die in the street.

Our taxes go to helping them. So the American people are paying to look after those with no healthcare.

In other words, we are already paying for insurance for the uninsured. Business owners who don't provide insurance for their employees just pass it on to the people in general.

They complain about having to provide group insurance for their workers, but they end up paying for heathcare for the uninsured anyway through use of their taxes, unless they find ways to avoid taxes and then they pass the bill on to others.

The bottom line is, we are as strong in this country as our weakest link. You can try to avoid this, but it comes out in social unstability, and environment of deprivation and despair.

You may think you and yours are okay because you are insulated from it. But it doesn't go away. It gets worse.

You may think you can stay clear of it, but your children, your grandchildren may not be as wily as you, and you will be handing them a world where they HAVE to maintain the level of priviledge for themselves that you have established for yourself or else become a part of the vast unpriviledged. Your personal legacy will only last a generation or two and then will be up to your descendents.

It is for your own good and the good of your descendants that we solve large social problems and create a kinder, safer world.

The need for health care is there. It's not like you can imagine it away. We should all be figuring out how we can meet it rather than trying to shove it off on others.

Employers are too cheap.

Papa Johns don't want to charge 15 cents a pizza in order to provide healthcare for their employees.

This is during a time of records corporate profits and huge cash reserves.

They have already been doing this because corporation HATE paying benefits and have always tried to avoid this expense.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7061022

This is where you people are wrong. It is NOT the employer's responsibility to provide people 'benefits' or healthcare. THAT is the entire crux of the problem.

You slackers want to the government to tax business to pay for your hypochondriac tendencies. If I have to pay that then I reserve the right to dictate what you eat, how much alcohol you drink, and if you are allowed to smoke.

The entire health benefit enigma is a fraudulent scam. The government can not force this. We will revolt and punish the employees. That's just the way it is. You think you are entitled but you are not. You slackers are dillusional. You think that businesses are an inexhaustible pool of money when in truth most barely get by. Just because the company owner makes a couple dollars does not mean the company is raking in money. And even if the owner reduced his own salary to minimum wage it can never amount to paying healthcare for all the employees. It quite simply will not work.

Even if it could work, the healthcare you would receive would be a nightmare like military style healthcare with death panels and mandatory vaccinations. You people fucked up. Get ready to pay for being greedy.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 18380503

Re: Goodbye free health care, hello 30 hour work week
It's funny how short sighted people are.

Companies aren't going to pay this bill. They will just lower the hours of employees under the limit so they are exempt from Obama's slacker tax. We will become a part time nation which will probably be the death blow to our economy. 30 hours a week max as an employee. If you want 40 hours a week you'll have to juggle two jobs.

It's gonna be hilarious. As a business owner I am definitely going underground. All my employees are going to 30 hours. Screw it. I'll dissolve my company before I pay that commie shit. And most business owners I know feel the same.

Wait a minute... First you cry ermahgerd that companies will do this terrible thing, then you follow it up saying that this is what you're going to do in your own company?

Hello pot, I'm the kettle: YOU'RE BLACK!
