Virus Breaks Out at NYC School Being Used as Storm Shelter

A Brooklyn high school being used as a shelter for Sandy victims has to be shut down and sanitized after about a dozen storm refugees came down with a stomach virus.

Mayor Bloomberg said John Jay High School will be closed Wednesday instead of opening for classes as scheduled.

"The school will be thoroughly cleaned and then reopened," Bloomberg said.

Well I live 3 miles west of the Mantoloking bridge, and I can tell you we got power back on tuesday afternoon, and were never without gas. The barrier island is still without utilities, most of the neighborhoods west of the bridge are being restoreed as we speak. Maybee be alittle more specific. Belmar may not get power till december. Mandatory evac for low lying areas along the shore. I am about 75-100 yrds from the metedeconk, and havee not been evacuated. Settle down fear mongerer!

Hurricane Sandy update: Local residents banned from barrier island up to 8 months

Residents are being forcibly evacuated tonight from seven Ocean County communities because of extensive repairs needed after the devastation Hurricane Sandy left behind, Seaside Height Police Chief Thomas Boyd said.

Authorities told residents they may not be able to return home for months.

"It's looking bad. It's a catastrophe," Boyd said.

The towns affected are Seaside Heights, Seaside Park, island sections of Berkeley Township, South Seaside Park, Lavallette, Ortley Beach and Mantoloking.

The decision followed an afternoon meeting among the chiefs of police in the affected communities and other county authorities.

Busloads of people were being escorted out, with several residents interviewed saying police and fire officials knocked on their doors, telling them they had five minutes to pack a bag before they had to leave.

Mary Jo Etheridge, 76, a Seaside Heights resident, said she was given about five minutes to pack a bag before she was put on a bus that took her west on Route 37 into Toms River. Her possessions were shoved into shopping bags.

It was a photo op we did most of the clean up, FEMA said houses were liveable when there was only a foundation left, so you know how they helped.
