Yep. Remember the secret conversation that Obama had with the Russians, where he, "just needed a little more time." Well, he's got it now. I wonder what that deal is going to turn out to be.
 Quoting: In-Situ

how come the report about two attack class subs being parked off the eastern seaboard is mute?
Defense: The fruit of unilateral disarmament, appeasement and promised "flexibility" patrols our East Coast near one of our largest ballistic missile submarine bases. Defense cuts and Russian subs — a double whammy.

'On June 1 or a bit later, we will resume constant patrolling of the world's oceans by strategic nuclear submarines," Russian Navy Commander Admiral Vladimir Vysotsky said in February. Keeping that promise, a Russian Sierra-2 class nuclear attack submarine cruised within 200 miles of our East Coast on the eve of a U.S. presidential election in which defense spending and priorities were a key issue.

This is the first time a Russian Sierra-2 class sub, believed to be based with Russia's Northern Fleet and armed with SSN anti-submarine warfare missiles and torpedoes, has been detected near the U.S. coast, reports Bill Gertz of the Washington Free Beacon.

"As was their primary mission during the Cold War, Russian SSNs nuclear attack submarines would likely be trying to track U.S. nuclear missile submarines deploying from Kings Bay, Ga., and to monitor U.S. naval deployments from Norfolk, Va.," according to Richard Fisher, a military analyst with the International Assessment and Strategy Center. Two guided missile submarines and six nuclear missile submarines are docked at Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base.

The Sierra-2 is comparable to the U.S. Los Angeles-class attack submarine. Russia is building a new class of attack submarines said to be comparable to the latest U.S. Virginia-class subs, Fisher says. The attack sub was accompanied by a nearby Russian electronic intelligence-gathering vessel that was granted safe harbor during Hurricane Sandy in the commercial port of Jacksonville, Fla., within listening range of Kings Bay.

Russian nuclear sub patrols, which fell sharply after the defeat of the Soviet Union, have returned with a vengeance after the famous pressing of the "reset" button by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. As we've noted, a more advanced and harder-to-detect Russian Akula-class attack submarine sailed undetected in the Gulf of Mexico in August along vital U.S. shipping lanes.

So as we gut our military budget and scrap major weapons systems, Russia continues to rearm. It recently announced the deployment of a new submarine-launched ballistic missile — a three-stage weapon with a 5,000-mile range that can carry up to 10 warheads.

The U.S. Navy has indicated a need for 313 ships to fulfill its obligations, while the Quadrennial Defense Review Independent Panel recommended a fleet of 346 ships. If current budget cuts aren't reversed and sequestration of defense funds mandated by the Budget Control Act remain in place, the Navy will shrink to 238 vessels and would lose two carrier battle groups.

Re: They Just announced they will not be restoring Power or Natural Gas to Sandy victims and they must evacuate!
As someone who actually lives in NJ and has seen the destruction from Sandy first hand, part of the reason for the second evacuation is that a number of trees and buildings were weakened significantly in the storm. There wasn't enough time to fix everything after the damage the first time around, so they're telling people to go further inland and wait it out.

The damage is already predicted to be significantly less than first thought because of the path of the storm. The storm front going up the coast has moved further east, meaning it won't directly hit most of the area. It will increase winds, which has the potential to knock over loose trees and power lines.

Now, I have serious questions about the speed of the initial response compared to what was actually accomplished in the week since Sandy. In my town, the schools were the last area to have their power restored. Trees are still sitting in the middle of the street on major roadways and the mayor is dictating what everyone in town can or cannot do. Friends and family in other parts of the state were told they'd have power back by Friday, then told on Friday they might get it back by Thanksgiving because they were no longer priority neighborhoods.

But at least Mayor Bloomberg, Andrew Cuomo, Chris Christie, and Barack Obama got nice photo-ops for such a quick response to the storm. Apparently, the new gold standard is not taking as long as FEMA took to respond to Hurricane Katrina. Hooray?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23199821

In my area, Westchester County NY, we had tons of trees and power poles down. Power poles broken in half by the wind, I've never seen that before. In my very small town we had 118 power poles down. We had 10 from Irene. The damage from this storm was vastly, vastly greater in our area, especially to electrical infrastructure. I was told that only 12 power poles can be replaced per day. It is a lot of work to get it delivered on site, erect and anchor it, and wire it up, for each single pole.

I think the road crews, the sort of people who move and remove trees, are needed to assist with electrical restoration. And/or maybe they are constrained from working because of down power lines; if they move trees they could pull on wires and pull down even more power poles.

I hope those are serious answers to your serious questions. These guys are working their asses off. We have cops down from 20 miles away up north who are not even driving home at night, to increase police presence during the recovery; this is surely true of other responders as well.

Officials who slam these guys doing the actual work deserve to have their nuts cut off, or if female, some other gruesome thing, in my opinion.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27212869

These people you mention, who are apparently doing a commendable job in working to restore the area, are mostly LOCALS.

Most of the bitching seems to be rightfully directed at FEMA and other federal agencies and officials as well as higher level state politicians. Most disturbing are reports of FEMA turning away relief efforts of others, as was done after Katrina.

New Jersey and New York both voted for Obama correct. There was a crappy response to Sandy before and after it hit. Now the real Sh!t is going to hit the fan cause Obama don't give a sh!t about all you people that are homeless, without power or in need of some clean underwear. I frankly am surprised that you east coasters would be so easily fooled by a shady Chicagoan, you got played and now you are not going to get sh!t for at least 6 to 8 weeks, Oh by the way that is just about the same amount of time it takes for a person to run throw everything when they are living pay check to pay check.

If you voted for Romney and he won he would have been on a plane to New Jersey and New York Today getting thinks done. Do you see Obama anywhere today? No ! get used to it
 Quoting: JackBalls 12355012

You obviously don't have much exposure to pinwheel-eyed east coast liberals.

A few days ago I was talking to my neighbor, both of us are still without power. He had to break into a political rant, expounding all the liberal talking points and contradicting himself several times. I vote third party anyway so had no energy or mood to tell him what a stupid brainwashed asshole he was (a teacher, no surprise).

He finishes his rant by saying, "All I know is I just want my power back on..."

HEY JACKASS... have you been paying attention? It's your Obammy who's for wind power and all that happy horseshit! You think wind power is gonna bring trucks full of gasoline to your neighborhood? You think wind power is gonna refine that gas and get it to distribution points?

Jackass.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27229787

I have to adjust my thinking in a direction that is best for me and not look out for others so much anymore. People are just to stupid to waist my time on anymore. It will be hard at first but I will have to learn not to help at the first sign of trouble. Maybe it has hindered some in that they learn nothing from their actions. Telling my neighbor, No I don't have any gas to spare when I have a five gallon can sitting in the garage will be hard. But I am pissed cause I asked him if he wanted me to get some gas for him two days before Sandy hit and he said no. So I guess No, I don't have any gas...

Virus Breaks Out at NYC School Being Used as Storm Shelter

A Brooklyn high school being used as a shelter for Sandy victims has to be shut down and sanitized after about a dozen storm refugees came down with a stomach virus.

Mayor Bloomberg said John Jay High School will be closed Wednesday instead of opening for classes as scheduled.

"The school will be thoroughly cleaned and then reopened," Bloomberg said.

NY Health Dept. issues drinking water advisories and updates.

Drinking Water Advisories Following Hurricane Sandy

Do Not Use or Do Not Drink Advisories
Boil Water Notices
Water Conservation Advisories

Hurricane Sandy affected many public drinking water systems. Most of these were well prepared and switched over to back-up power with minimal interruption in service. Some drinking water systems, however, were more severely impacted and either lost service or may have become contaminated by floodwaters. Others may not have any water quality concerns but may need to limit the amount of water use.

The following three categories include drinking water systems that have Do Not Use/Do Not Drink advisories, Boil Water Notices, or Water Conservation advisories. The lists were updated from information received as of 10:00am, November 7, 2012.

Do Not Use or Do Not Drink Advisories

Drinking water systems that were severely damaged, have limited amounts of available water, or may otherwise have been unusually compromised have been issued a Do Not Use or a Do Not Drink advisory.

County PWS ID# System Name Water Restriction Do Not Use/Do Not Drink Date

Kids in tents in the backyard are different then tents when you really camp in the wilderness.

Kids in the backyard come in when their cold, hungary or wet.

Camping in rural areas do not give you that luxury. If it is cold, windy or raining you need to be prepared in your tent.

You need to have a tent that will sustain winds, water and the temperature.

I have a tent for my kid to camp out in the backyard too.

It's the tent you want to rely on for basic survival.

Basic camping 101 does not include your backyard.

This time??? AT LEAST 15 people wiating in line, and they had to open a room DOUBLE the size to accommodate the crowd coming to vote. SO DON'T TELL ME THERE WERE LESS VOTERS.

Here at the New Jersey Shore, no one I know is relying on the government to take care of them. We, the people, have organized places to cook and feed people, shelter people, clothing drives, etc.,. I'm cooking from my very own little kitchen for as many people as I possibly can. I've cooked several meals so far for volunteer workers and others. I'm just one person obviously, but if everyone does what they can, we don't need no stinkin' government to take care of us. We can take care of each other.
