On average the number of earthquakes that will strike each year include: 1 earthquake of magnitude 8 or larger; 17 earthquakes of magnitudes ranging from 7 to 7.9; 134 earthquakes of magnitudes ranging from 6 to 6.9; and 1,319 earthquakes of magnitudes 5 to 5.9. Statistically speaking we are still "due" another six 7-7.9 magnitude earthquakes in the next 7 wks…by the end of the year if we want to keep in the "average" range . Actually by looking at the USGS website we actually have a lower count of earthquakes in all but one of the magnitudes this year than in the past several years and that one is still within "average" range! [ link to earthquake.usgs.gov] Quoting: doomie girl the statistics are based on MONTHLY averages, so statistically NO in that context.
