Why do Americans use the wrong colours for political parties?

I cannot figure this out. In almost every other Western country including Canada, blue represents the conservative position and red represents the liberal position. In fact, when we call someone a "red" we are usually associating them with communism or some variant.

Why do Americans use red for conservative and blue for liberal? It seems counterintuitive.
