Leak at Shut Down California Nuke Plant: “Likely to persist for some days” — Officials “must immediately say if leak is radioactive”
A reactor at the crippled San Onofre nuclear power plant is leaking hydrogen gas into the environment, according to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Although it is not yet known if the leaking gas is radioactive, Friends of Earth said the latest trouble at San Onofre is strong evidence that the plant is not safe to restart. [link to enenews.com]

Security computer at San Onofre mysteriously shuts down

A security computer at the San Onofre nuclear generating plant near San Clemente mysteriously shut down early Saturday morning, prompting the plant manager to issue an "unusual event" report.

San Onofre beach reopens, but with warning

"September 23, 2011|By FRED SWEGLES
San Onofre State Beach reopened the gate to popular Surf Beach on Friday afternoon but is advising visitors against entering the water until San Diego County health officials declare the water safe after a sewage spill from the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.

The power plant reported that a blocked sewage line within the plant led to a 7,000-gallon spill into the ocean a mile offshore about 4 p.m. Thursday."

Skeptics challenge San Onofre nuclear-plant crisis planners

Five-hour meeting about lessons learned from Japan’s Fukushima nuclear-plant emergency is occasionally interrupted by critics who don’t believe the speakers’ claims that a similar event is unlikely here and that local plans are adequate.

San Diego, CA – “An employee at the San Onofre nuclear plant fell into a reactor pool last week, but did not present any radiation threat, federal regulators said Friday. KNX 1070′s Tom Reopelle reports the news marks the second recent incident at the plant northern San Diego County. Victor Dricks with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission said the unidentified employee did not receive a significant radiation dose after he lost his balance while leaning over to retrieve a flashlight and fell into the reactor pool in Unit 2 on Jan. 27.”

Depends what you consider a significant dose, I would say.

Many plants in the US

116 million[2010] within 50 mile radius in
the US. 104 reactors.

Interactive map at link.

Indian Point 17 million
Limerick 8
San Onofre 8
Dresden 7

[snip]

That's 116 million nuclear neighbors, up from 109 million a decade earlier, according to the analysis conducted for msnbc.com by Longcreative, a data analysis and design company.

The population within 10 miles of Pennsylvania's Three Mile Island reactor grew 11 percent. At Pilgrim, outside of Boston, the increase was 41 percent. Near San Onofre on the California fault lines, 50 percent.

Among the 100 most populous U.S. cities on the new census map, 26 have a nuclear plant within 50 miles: New York, Chicago, Philadelphia (3 different plants nearby), Phoenix, San Diego, Fort Worth, Charlotte (2 plants), Detroit, Baltimore, Boston (2 plants), Washington, Virginia Beach and Norfolk, Omaha, Raleigh and Durham, Miami, Cleveland, Minneapolis and St. Paul (2 plants), New Orleans, Pittsburgh, Toledo (2 plants), Newark, Baton Rouge, and Rochester, N.Y.

How is hydrogen gas not radioactive?

Correct me if i'm wrong please, but 2 ways to get hydrogen gas from cooling water, is electric current through water and radiation. since we know its not electrical it must be radiation separation. so they are not telling us its radioactive gas.

This might be the excuse they use for higher radiation in california. Instead of Fukushima fallout, they will blame the Dolly Parton memorial.

That's not nearly far enough if San Onfre ever has a really serious problem, because most of what they call "inland" in socal is downwind from the plant, and stores that air in a big inversion layer most days.

Re: Leak at Shut Down California Nuke Plant: “Likely to persist for some days” — Officials “must immediately say if leak is radioactive”
think about it, the reactor has been shut down for a year. and now they are doing needed upgrades? And now it leaks. This is planned per agenda 21. but the big question is why is it leaking now when an earthquake is supposed to wipe out western shores? Things not going on to plan? Maybe a nuke on the fault line is needed to speed things up. blame the reactor leakage for radioactive rise.
