Actually total welfare spending in the US is 220 billion a year. That is less than 3 days of your war! Yet no one talks about the real economic elephant in the room. Pretty crazy don't you think?

FACT

62% of the US Federal Budget goes to entitlements (in 2012)

Entitlement spending in 2012 totaled 2.05 TRILLION.

I'm not sure where you got your numbers from but they aren't close to the truth.

Defense spending is 676 BILLION.

Entitlements cost 3X Defense. I'm not advocating spending nearly that much on Defense. Just pointing out the real numbers.

Your wrong, very little of that actually goes to non-working poor.

"Distribution of Tax Expenditure Benefits Differs Greatly, and Is Much Less Favorable to the Middle Class and Low-Incomes Families
The distribution of entitlement benefits stands in sharp contrast to the distribution of benefits for tax expenditures, which former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan has called “tax entitlements.”  The Tax Policy Center finds that under current tax policy:a
The top fifth of the population receives 66 percent of tax-expenditure benefits (compared to 10 percent of entitlement benefits).
The middle 60 percent of the population receives a little over 31 percent of tax-expenditure benefits (compared to 58 percent of entitlement benefits).
The bottom fifth receives just 2.8 percent of tax-expenditure benefits (compared to 32 percent of entitlement benefits).b
The top 1 percent of the population receives 23.9 percent of tax-expenditure benefits — more than eight times as much as the bottom fifth of the population, and nearly as much as the middle 60 percent of the population.
a These TPC figures refer to 2011 tax policy. The figures are for individual tax expenditures and do not include corporate tax expenditures. If corporate tax expenditures were included, the results would be skewed even more heavily to the top of the income spectrum.
b The TPC figures are based on tax filing units, rather than entire households (thus, the “bottom fifth” means the 20 percent of tax units with the lowest incomes). If our analysis had been based on smaller units similar to tax units rather than on households, it would have shown that the bottom fifth of the population received a somewhat smaller share of the entitlement benefits (about 25 percent rather than 32 percent) and the middle slightly more (64 percent rather than 58 percent)."

The government spent approximately $1.03 trillion on 83 means-tested federal welfare programs in fiscal year 2011 alone — a price tag that makes welfare that year the government’s largest expenditure, according to new data released by the Republican side of the Senate Budget Committee.

The total sum taxpayers spent on federal welfare programs was derived from a new Congressional Research Service (CRS) report on federal welfare spending — which topped out at $745.84 billion for fiscal year 2011 — combined with an analysis from the Republican Senate Budget Committee staff of state spending on federal welfare programs (based on “The Oxford Handbook of State and Local Government Finance”), which reached $282.7 billion in fiscal year 2011.

I pointed out the non-working poor because it seems that most people who think of "welfare" think of the money going to people who like to do nothing but sit on their asses all day when in actuality a very small percentage of welfare expenditures go to them. People are constantly complaining about their tax dollars going to welfare recipients when corporations and the wealthy are the ones getting way more of our tax expenditures.

Re: You would think USA is a 5 trillion a year welfare state by reading GLP posts.
What gets me is the fact that people think that money just vanishes into thin air when it gets doled out, when it really doesn't.

It goes into the hands of shop owners and providers of services. Who in turn spend it on something else. So on and so forth until tax season rolls back around, and it gets back into the hands of the gov'ment.

If you are looking for where we are hemorrhaging money that never gets seen again, you need to be looking into the pockets of corporations who spend it all overseas.

Now as to where the money that gets doled out COMES from, that's another whole can of worms. But don't hate that money gets injected INTO our communities. It's still here at least.

Like all the landlords with tenants on Section 8 who are as much welfare recipients as any welfare queen.
