It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury. After that, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits with the result the democracy collapses because of the loose fiscal policy ensuing, always to be followed by a dictatorship, then a monarchy |

That's right, you're slur belongs in a different camp altogether. Second, the people in the U.S. can't vote themselves anything. The idea that people are somehow giving themselves money by electing Obama is ridiculous. The government controls that and hasn't changed their stance on it in a long time. But... Welfare! That has to be the same thing, doesn't it? Nope. More people are on it, but that;s due to the incredible Depression our economy is in right now. That, by the way, is cyclical and has nothing to do with who's President at the moment. Bush was in power when it started, but it wasn't his fault either. We should be starting to come out of it soon as well, and indicators are starting to show that. It will take a few years, but it also isn't Obama rescuing us. Heinlein had a lot of great things to say, but he was also just a man that wrote science fiction novels. Interesting and intelligent, but not someone to base your system of governance on. The big difference is that the body politic CAN control what happens. We don't have bread and circuses now for a reason. This is a Republic, not a Democracy. |
