You are the stupid fuck. ER's are NOT a substitute for a real healthcare system. Plus charges are significantly more expensive. Finally, the cost for those that can't pay are passed on to the rest of us.

He ASKED how it works here, He wanted to know if people are turned away if they are dying. I told him how it worked for poor people that needed emergency medical treatment but couldn't pay for it. Also informed him that you don't have to pay upfront to receive emergency treatment. It's a fact. What's your issue?

I wasn't advocating for people to just stroll into an ER for a cold, jack up a large bill and force taxpayers to handle it.

Calm the fuck down.

I come from a medical family as well (I'm the blacksheep banker of the bunch) and they are all extremely upset and worried about this, there are going to be a lot of unintended (at least you hope they're unintended) consequences to this boondoggle...

Community healthcare clinics are already shutting down.

There is already an extreme shortage of doctors taking medicaid and medicare, this is only going to get worse.

People are now finding out that the insurance plans they've had for years aren't going to meet Obamacare requirements, so they are being shuffled to more expensive policy's...

It's a nightmare...

At least we had Medicaid before Obamacare, because now less than 30% of doctors will even take Medicaid or Medicare...

My sister is a doctor (OB), she called me today and said she had been crying since last night. She is beside herself. Now that the final nail has been driven into the US medical industry it's hit her hard.
Main issue for doctors is that they are being mandated too and regulated like never before. Most of Obamacare focuses on regulations, not the patient. That's what most people don't get. It's all about reporting back to the government. They will be determining your treatments and watching every facet of your "care".
This is scary. Take some time and dissect the bill. It's a whopper, makes our tax code look like 1st grade reading.

One of the mandates in Obamacare is that anything used that is bought or sold in the amount of $600 or more must have a 1099 attached. Not just required by businesses but through private transactions such as yard sales, selling your car, selling or trading baseball cards; coins; labor, antiques, guns, or anything of value.

This was one of the 20,000 pages of things shoved in at the last minute because no one was given enough time to read the bill.

They jammed it in there and said, "we have 3 years to tweak it." Well it took 2 years and three attempts to remove that shitty law. It's all about control...complete control. Not even so much about money.

With that law, they planned to ensnare and entrap normal law abiding citizens in a legal quagmire thus putting mainly the middle class in legal jeopardy and losing their rights to bear arms, and classifying them as felons.

I can only imagin the OTHER wonderful control mechanisms hidden in the rest of the Obamacare bill since they will be kicking in like clockwork very soon.

Where has your ignorant sister been??? What do you think the HMO's and insurance companies have been doing for decades?!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 26957116

Listen, I Know everyone is upset about obama, but I agree with this last post, it can't get any worse. Insurance companies dictate our care now. I was born with rare type of cancer in 81. Had kemo and radiation. Have dealt with insurance companies my whole life. When I was 21, was hospitalized a total of 2 months, because the insurance company in NH, would not approve my dr. In boston because it was "out of network". After a series of hospitalizations, they finally agreed to one visit with my Boston dr concerning the issue. I have not spent a day in the hospital since. The bill the insurance company got was over $100,000 for the 2 months in the hospital. Had they approved the 1 visit initially, they would have figured out the problem from the get go, and saved $999,700. I have also had many instances where my doctor would prescribe me a medication due to the numerous issues I have as a result of the treatment I had as a child, and insurance would refuse and say "well, that med is for someone over 80." The way I see it is they are already dictating our care. If I were to make an appointment with my kidney dr. tomorrow (only have 1 kidney due to the radiation I had as a child) would have to schedule 3-4 months out to get an appointment. Can't get much worse than this. By the way, Iam a self employed attorney and pay for a plan with Harvard Pilgrim, not welfare.

I personally know over 30 Docs that are planning early retirement if obummercare kicks in fully. Say the 'pains' are too much for very little reward.

Some have said they would be better off waiting tables.

I feel sorry for the newer docs out there, who probably haven't paid of their student loans. They are soooooo screwed.

Even know a doc with a kid who was planning to go into medicine. Strongly discouraged his kid. Suggested that the only field with a possibility of paying off student debt might be orthodontics.

This is so bad people. The repercussions from this bill have not even begun.

Well since you are trying to copy Sweden, here you have to wait for years for surgery unless it's vital.

In ERs you have to wait for hours.

Also you will get many unqualified doctors to fill up those that will quit, usually foreigners that don't even speak your language.

My doctors are now tethered to a computer that half the time doesn't work, or loses files. Just watch there are gonna be alot of them that are gonna shut and lock their doors. When I say tethered I mean they have to drag the damn thing around with them while seeing patients. I thought one of mine was gonna cry today. This is no aunt or uncles or third hand story this is what I saw and heard myself. I hope, having cancer that I am grandfathered in as my treatment began in 2010.

I can attest that the doc's are tethered to a computer.

You only get 10 minutes with them now and 9 minutes of that time is the doc sitting at the computer trying to figure out what screen he is on.

how can he be paying attention to you when he/she is trying to input info into the computer.

I've worked in healthcare for the last 4 years in 3 different capacities and have witnessed various aspects of what Obamacare is and will be.

One of the the first things was "Meaningful Use". In short, you and I got to pay medical providers to get up to speed with Electronic Medical Records (EMR), to the tune of $18,000 per year, per physician that complied. There are many microcosms within "Meaningful Use". It forces providers to completely change how they see patients. There are dozens and dozens of "measures" that must be met, all adding up to a big pain in the ass for doctors. Meaningful Use is mandatory for any physician that wishes to accept Medicare. Guess what? Thousands of doctors are bailing on Medicare because it isn't worth the bullshit. They simply won't take Medicare any longer.

Secondly, by the time the "Cadillac" rule kicks in, about 60% of the policies out there are going to fall under that stupid fucking rule. Basically, it punishes you and me for having a real job with real benefits that we earned because we actually possess a viable skill. All "Cadillac" health plans will be hit with a 40% tax. The law passed in 2009 and they set the ceiling at that time. It doesn't actually take effect until 2019 and doesn't account for inflation. By the time it takes effect, it's going to hit a hell of a lot more people that the "Goldman Sachs" executives it was supposedly meant to target.

Tell me, all of you Obamabots; where the fuck is your free insurance from this plan? How's that workin' out for ya? Thus far, I have yet to see health insurance availability increase from this pile of shit tax-bag. Get ready for 4 more years of a dried corn cob up your ass because that's all this clown has to offer.

There is a local doctor who has been very vocal about what's coming with Obamacare. That physician reports that a survey (reputable) revealed that over *one third* of doctors are seriously considering shutting down. They will end up being forced to work for .gov, at whatever rate of pay the .gov decides they should make.

Have you forgotten that the bill lets the .gov have access to your bank accounts??

I bet you have........

Re: My sister called me today, she's a doctor.
I work in a hospital and there have been other changes in getting ready for obamacare. One change that just came down the pipe in the last week is they have changed the staffing grids. Now nurses and pcts can have more patients. This is dangerous on so many levels. The unwork on is nephrology and inpatient dialysis. These patients are extremely ill. We also have pre kidney transplant patients. Changing the staffing grid so nurses have more patients is dangerous. Also, they have it where the patient care techs have 18 patients apiece. Now, bear in mind my hospital has also basically eleminated the phlebotomist position and ekg techsand techs do this. So, they do all blood draws, ekgs, vital signs, change linen, help patients with baths, feeding toileting, plus a myriad of other duties. It may not seem like much, but by increasing the patient load and combining several positions into one it puts the patients at risk. Also, something that really has nothing to do with patient care, but they are doing away with the employee pention plan. I am rambling, but I don't think anyone is going to be prepared for the changes coming down the pipe. I know we keep getting surprises every time a new memo comes out at work.

Not sure why ANYONE would have sympathy for physicians who have been willing participants in not one, but TWO systems that are unconscionably corrupt, self-serving, and deceitful - aka: the American medical industry and big pharma.

Most doctors hate people who ask questions, they actively work to deny the fact that there are often safe alternatives, they have no compunction about prescribing drugs they KNOW are dangerous just so they can get their country club kickbacks, they push treatments on people knowing full well they will not be helped, and it is in THEIR best interest for everyone to remain borderline sick/healthy.

Whining and crying doctors? Boo-frigging-hoo.
 Quoting: itsamadmadworld

I know doctors (several personally) who are RESTRICTED by the AMA and big pharma and big insurance.

When I say restricted I mean that they literally cannot tell you the truth, or give you a requested treatment, or say certain things because of a HUGE threat of actually LOOSING their license to practice.

IOW, doctors are being held hostage by the AMA, ADA, big pharma, and insurance companies.

Re: My sister called me today, she's a doctor.

What's wrong with making money after you do eight years of college, internship, $500,000+ in student loans???

You damn well ought to make some money after all of that...

Re: My sister called me today, she's a doctor.
Do you really have to pay cash to get fixed in the hospital in America.

What if you are severly injured or dying and you dont have enough money to pay them, what happens, or do you have to pay first.

I'm keen to understand how the system works now, and what affect this new system will have, could someone explain for me please.

I'm sure others have answered before me, but in America - pre_obamacare, when you are injured or on the cusp of death you were taken care of and the bills came later. And you could work with the bill collector (by paying as little as 5 or 10 bucks a month).

I assume now, that won't be an option.

There's a shortage of doctors, period, and it's just gonna get worse. My dad is a retired surgeon and he's very concerned about how few specialists the medical schools are graduating now. It's not worth it to work your ass off and sink yourself hundreds of thousands in debt...who knows if it'll pay off anymore? Rural areas are getting hit the hardest. I have elderly relatives who have to drive 200 miles to see a specialist when they used to have plenty within 30 miles.
I don't know where you get your delusions, laser brain.
