No, not when 6.0s are happening regularly. This was a rarity in years past. These always get on the local news. Get lost.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1271534

This is NOT a rarity. Are you serious? Go look at geologic data on the ring of fire, ANYWHERE on the ring of fire. Stop being a fear-monger without logic. Use your brain, learn something for once in your sad, miserable life.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 14541046

You are insane. Or a bot.

We are not talking about "anywhere on the ROF"...we are talking about Cascadia. 6.0's are not common here...never have been. 2s and 3s, yes, not 6's. Again, local media always reports on these, and when these happened when I was a kid it was news all around the house and the the town. Now it's become more common.

Go back to gangstalking- it probably suits you better IQ wise.

Hmmm, reporting it right now on CBC, said this quake is directly on the Cascadia fault line and is a completely different quake, not an after shock from the 7.7 Charlotte Island quake.

Once again, yes, this is the ROF action, however, these quakes have been bigger and more frequent in the last 6 months. What used to be a 1-3 mag's regularly has increased to 4-6+ mag's. I've been monitoring the USGS site since 2008, that's alot of daily monitoring. They are bigger and much more frequent, period.
 Quoting: 4Evergirl

Okay let me explain to you how tectonic plates work: when one plate moves, other plates will move, shift, slide and slip as well.. thus increased activity over a period of time. This happens a LOT. A recent example was the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan last year. Look at the Pacific around that time period and see how many other 6.5+ quakes there were around the same time/month. So yes, there has been lots of activity lately, and there will be more activity forthcoming.

I really can't believe people on this forum do not research something as simple to understand as tectonic plates.. especially since the majority of them think it's going to be the end of days. As a academic scholar it really saddens me that as a human being you can't spend 10 minutes studying something you're interested in.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 14541046

quakes have increased, particularly large ones in the PACNW (and worldwide) the past few years. This is indisputable.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1271534

NO Quakes have not increased complete bullshit rubbish.

AVERAGE DATA with 2012 a SLOW year for earthquakes. Do you idiots know how to read???

All I see is average data and average numbers.Oh, but wait the USGS "hides" earthquake data so may be there were a few 9.5s we didn't hear about how silly of me.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 17299635

The year is not over yet...the past 1/2 decade seen a lot more in the 3-5 range which means constant movement...on top of the usual major ones. Also, according to this data since 2000 there is an uptick, but I am talking about a span of 30 years, not ten, and only about larger ones in the NW. Don't you think we have a right to be concerned, with Cascadia due? Or should we all just bury our heads in the sand and go back to sleep because nothing bad is *ever* going to happen?

As posted in another thread:

'Silent Earthquakes' Ripple Under Cascadia

October 4, 2012 from N3

SEATTLE - Parts of Washington and Oregon are in the midst of silent earthquakes this week. You can't feel this so-called "slow slip" quake and it doesn't cause damage. Still, scientists want to learn more about the recently discovered phenomenon.

Little is certain so far, but there's a possibility these deep tremors could trigger a damaging earthquake or serve as a warning bell for the Big One.

[…]

"This kind of earthquake is distinctly different than the earthquakes we have been watching for a hundred years, because this patch of fault that we're watching takes three weeks to break. Whereas ordinarily something a hundred miles long would take a minute or less to break."

"About half of our instruments can see it," Vidale adds. "It's a very slight level of rattling. I don't think I have ever heard of somebody who we believed could feel it."

[…]

But there's a flip side. The grinding and slippage at depth increases the strain closer to the surface where the North American plate and the oceanic plate are stuck together or "locked." When that offshore fault zone eventually gives way, we get the damaging Big One.

[…]

Schmidt points to a study published in the journal Science that describes how last year's great earthquake and tsunami in Japan was preceded by slow slip and tremor near the epicenter."

Re: 6.3 eq Vancouver Island
time to watch the CSZ tremor maps at the pnsn. the CSZ usually is not very active since the last major earthquake and tsunami was over 300 years ago. there is alot of evidence of past quakes and tsunamis, ghost forests, stumps and debris on beaches in oregon and washington state, stuff like that.

if earthquakes releived stress as so many hope that they do, im sure it makes sense that perhaps in the immediate are where the quake happens it might release some stress where the quake happened but also transfer stress to other surrounding areas. if it was the cause that all these quakes relieve stress and therefore reduce the risk of a large quake from happening, then it stands to reason that there would not be large magnitude quakes and tsunamis from displacement and all the wonderful evidence of past quakes and tsunamis just wouldnt exist.

as another noted, the episodic tremor and slip event has apperantly just finished, but the tremor semsor network does not go to haida. the southern part of the CSZ still has tremor ongoing, and today around victoria island there was some tremor activity. id watch the tremor maps at the PNSN, but even that wont mean a prediction could be made, but it raises the stakes and stress.

The CSZ is pretty much silent, and locked much further inland due to new research. ill try and the one pdf that is interesting.
