What Happens To Western Canada When The Big One Along The Coast Hits and Takes Out The Port. Everything Stops.
When ever I bring up DOOM most people around where I live and some of my Family and my Freinds all think I'm Crackers. They think they are completely immuned to disaster. That may be true in a way as Alberta where most of my family are doesn't have Earthquakes so to speak or alot of faults in the province. Ditto for Sasatchewan or Manitoba. But what they fail to realize is that everything they eat just about. Everything they wear just about. Everyhting they purchase in the stores all comes from the Vancouver Coast and the Port located there.

The Vancouver Port is huge and alot of whats imported into Canada comes thru there. Especially from Asia. Its all trucked from there to all points West. The main Highway coming out of there heading East thru to Alberta is almost wall to wall Semi Transports carrying goods East to the Western Provinces. So if Vancouver ever has a big Earthquake and the Port is hit with a Tsunami...It All Stops. Even all the goods transported by train in huge Shipping containers would be effected. The amount of goods that goes through that Port in a day is staggering. Millions of containers a month. Not just being recieved but sent for export.

Everybody always thinks nothing will happen. I thought what went on around the East Coast would be a wake up call for everybody but some people never ever think it will happen to them ever.

It could be just that easy. A complete stoppage of all things. Food and Goods. How much worse could it get. How fast would and could things start to fall apart. Well almost instantly.

Wake Up my fellow Canadians in the West. Disaster for you is only an Earthquake Away.

I don't know where you shop but most of mine at least produce I buy local. I do read labels. Everything in Canadian Tire and WalMart is from China. Alot of food is from China. The Phillipines. Taiwan. Maybe you should look closer.

I'm from Alberta Buddy Redneck. Hunt and Fish you say. You live there you should know that nobody eats any game any fish anymore in Alberta. Toxic Waste. Like to see you drink out of the Red Deer River. Everything is polluted. Aside from a few General Mills Plants that sell GMO Cereals and XL Meats that poison people everything you get just about comes off the Coast Cities. Thats exactely the kind of mentallity I would expect from most Albertans. Raw Raw. Nothing can get us here. Ya well wait and see my Redneck Freind. Thats exactely how all those New Yorkers Felt. Your in for a big wke up call one day. You'll see.

It sure would be difficult TM, but like the Albert guy, I would just work towards eating off the land, hunt, fish and grow a garden. In Sask here.

You and everybody else. Game would last for how long you think...? One season cause everybody is doing the same thing. Everybody from your cities would be in the rural area's. It would be a shooting spree when they got done rustling the cows and horses. At least in Sask you can eat the Game without killing yourself with Mercury and alike.

You guys would be no better off than anybody else. It would just take longer to sink in.

Ask your local retailers where everything in your stores comes from. Its all trucked in from two ports. West and East but mostly West. China and Asia is where most of it comes from cause its cheap. Even if you could get stuff off the East Coast it would be 20 times as expensive and hard to get. You'd have to share with the rest of the country.

Trust me this is no laughing matter. One day it could simply quit coming there. Most stores have 3 days worth of supplies available at one time. Everything arrives daily, Everyday all year long.

First off you are way off on your assessment of city people emptying into the country side and shooting all the game. There aren't that many hunters and most city people are useless tits once they leave the city.

Your point on the the complete stop to supplies after a big tsunami is well taken............ however. In all likelihood the ports that will get hammered are Seattle, Portland and LA. Vancouver will not get hit as bad in most scenarios due to where it is located and the partial protection it gets from Burrard Inlets layout and the buffer provided by Vancouver Island and the Olympic Peninsula.

The ports wide open to the Pacific are most likely to be wiped out and those are south of the 49th. Not saying that there could not be damage, but odds are the 'big one' is going to hit south of the Olympic Peninsula on the fault off Washington/Oregon/CA.

Just because city folk are usless TITS doesn't make them any less a problem when faced with starvation. They may not know much but when people get hungery they will do just about anything. The first place and first thing those in the Cities are going to do is flock to the countrysides as the Cities will be war zones. All the Survival sites TELL people to get out of the big cities. Whats left is the rural area's. I don't think it would even take one season for the game to disapear. I think its more like one month.

I just read an article that was published yesterday. YAHOO. The head of the coast guard has asked that the emergency response base at KITSILANO be moved right away. Thats in the exact area where most would think it would be protected by the inlet. He said the docks and base on shore was in harms way. They have found that even though the structures are imbedded in the bedrock that the surrounding area has an overlay of clay and sediment underneath it. That liquidfaction would play a big role in the destruction of same and destroy the docks and buildings. That the bridges in the area would most likely be damaged and further block their attempts to get out of the area.

A tsunami even a ways away would funnel the water into the inlet and create an even bigger wave as it is narrowed and funneled thru the inlet.

Nothing is safe and nothing is certain. Everybody is guessing.

The point I was trying to make is that NOBODY is safe from disaster. Even if they are not in the area where it occurs. There are lots of side effects that can occur and endanger human life.

I think all people should have at least some supplies in reserve for a rainy day.

Actually all bets are off on the fault line. They just recently announced that the once thought seperate faults are one big one. The Cascadia fault is attached to the San Andres.

I just hope if an earthquake hits, it'll be on land and not in the water. I don't think I am prepared for a tsunami. I am prepared for an earthquake however and have all the necessary supplies ready.
I live in Richmond, BC.. and yes most of the food I buy is indeed from Asia. There won't be that much of a food shortage if a big one hits, we'll just be missing asian cuisine for awhile.

Historically, 75% of the damaging earthquakes in the Vancouver island area happened in the next 60 day window.

December 15th is the 140th anniversary of one of the most damaging earthquakes in the region, with a few more anniversaries occurring this month as well.

Canada gets its earthquakes in the fall winter 90% of the time.

Read the dates of when they occurred and the pattern of years between them.... See the pattern and how it is overdue?

....Portland is over 100 miles inland. Seattle is what we are mostly worried about out here. All three are in harms way, but Seattle and Vancouver are more at risk than Portland. That's why documentaries on Cascadia always focus on Seattle for analysis of building structures, etc.

That said, a big enough EQ on Cascadia all up and down the fault line can create liquification far inland, and all three cities are at risk for that just like in Japan.

Re: What Happens To Western Canada When The Big One Along The Coast Hits and Takes Out The Port. Everything Stops.
There's only really one highway that goes from the coast to Alberta that everybody uses. The railway runs along that same corridor thru the mountains. The semi tractors all leave vancouver and take the same route to get there. Thru the lower mainland thru Kamloops past Sicamous and then Revelstoke then Roger Pass where the avalanches always close the highway to Golden then Field then Banff then Canmore past Cockrane into Calgary. That whole route aside from the Lower Mainland is mountain highways. From Vancouver to Calgary is 16 hours give or take. The highway between Revelstoke thru to Bannf is notorious for being shut down in the Winter months due to Avalanches and Avalanche Control. Lots of snow in the high mountain passes always. Spectacular drive but very treacherous in the winter.

I really hate that drive now. So many transport trucks on that highway its unreal. Wall to wall just about all the time now. Add in all the tourists coming from Alberta to BC in the summer and its crazy.

Landslides occur quite alot also.

A flash flood covered the turn off highway that leads from that highway and takes people into Vernon and Kelowna this spring.Big detours to get around because of course being in mountains there are just a few roads in and around.

If a really bad blizzard or another landslide was to happen on the high mountain passes especially in and around Golden then it could shut things down big time for quite a while. All it would take is a week and people would start to feel the effects.
