Very nice, 42 light years, I hope we one day can directly image it. It's too bad it's not a transiting planet, that way we could study its atmospheric composition much sooner.

Yeah, 'cause these planet things are disposable, right?

You just use it, fuck it up and go find another one...

We haven't learnt our lesson on Earth, you think it would be a good idea for us to go there?

Wouldn't be surprised if this has been well known within the Astronomical society for years..

seriously more bullshit fantasies, an artists impression of a fantasy planet with life just like one of my illustrated childrens books back in the 60's. they still want to pull the wool over your eyes and take the funding.

if you really knew what was out there you'd be on your hands and knees right now.

Re: 'Super-Earth' Alien Planet May Be Habitable for Life
No other civilization in existence wants to reach out to our primitive culture because we can't even get along with ourselves let alone anyone who is "different". It will take a few more hundred thousand years before we learn to get along with ourselves and others I believe.

We are too primitive and war-like to cooperate with a higher intelligence. Soon after meeting them we would be plotting a way to take them down and steal their technology, even if they come in peace we won't let them be peaceful with us. Our leaders would be scared of an intelligent race of E.T.s and start plotting a way to take them down and steal their resources.

We are just smart monkeys in reality, and for the most part unable to co-exist with any other form of intelligent life. Look at what we do with other intelligent species on our own planet. We kill whales and dolphins just for fun and maybe a meal.

This is interesting, should we try radio communications?

In just 84 years we could possibly get an answer! I say go for it.

Re: 'Super-Earth' Alien Planet May Be Habitable for Life
Plus the fact that we destroy our own planet, pretty much ensuring that we are going to destroy ourselves in the long run. We have polluted our homeland to the point where we don't have much time left. Atomic weapons was the worst invention in human history and pretty much sealed our fate to an early extinction and the end of our home world.

The toxins we have released into the atmosphere and our oceans may already be too much to recover from and it may damn well kill off all life on earth eventually. We have passed the point of no return long ago. Now we slowly but surely die as we have poisoned ourselves and our world. We pump out the life blood of the planet (OIL) and use it selfishly to drive around in our SUV's and the Earth is unhappy with us. This is why we are seeing larger and more catastrophic natural disasters in the form of large earthquakes and super storms. The Earth is trying to rid itself of its cancer (us) and activity will ramp up until it is done, but it may well be too late for our Earth to recover from the grave injuries we have inflicted upon it.

Sadly, nothing can be done at this point unless we stop all harmful activity and start doing all we can to heal the planet and even then it may be too late. But we won't change our ways, our corporate entities who "own" us and all the land would lose money and they can't have that. I still find it obnoxious that people can claim to "own" property on Earth when in reality it belongs to NOBODY. We use the land to provide resources, shelter, and food for us to survive. The land and all the oceans belong to one thing: our Mother Earth.

Until we evolve past our current war-like ways nobody wants to reach out to us. Other civilizations in the universe trat us like the red-headed stepchild that we are. They abduct us and probe us because that is what we would do to them if we had the chance. If we were intelligent enough to have a productive conversation with them they would treat us better. But we want to kill them and take their technology with force, not with good will and peace.

Interesting to note, if you were an alien on that planet looking back at earth with a sufficiently powerful radio telescope, you would be witnessing mankind's first trips to the moon right now. In less than 2 years, such aliens would witness the launch of the first probe from earth to reach solar escape velocity, Pioneer 10.

cool thought, I wonder then if we can expect a radio message anytime soon? Signs of advance sivilisation must have been there for at least 50 years now, so maybe in about 30 years a message arrives?

Good question, if starting to send devices beyond one's own solar system is a criteria for contact, then we only have about 44 years to wait. Hopefully I'll still be around then to see.

42 light years, even if we had light speed probes, it would take 84 years before you got it there and sent back pictures.

that sucks.

why do things have to be so far away!!!!
