many self-made businesspeople (small mom and pop businesses) and even the larger mid-range owner operator businesses automatically relate to the republican party.

For the last 50 years, republicans were the party of businesses, large and small. During that time, large and small businesses interests were pretty much aligned.

Not true today. Small businesses have been wrecked by globalization and fucking with exchange rates and devaluation of the currency. Big businesses live from corporate welfare and political favors gained by lobbyists from the political machine. Not available to small businesses and paid for by small businesses in many ways.

Romney was backed by military interests promoting the war machine and bankers looking to make more money by going after ira's and other tasty tidbits of personal wealth.

Obama had the support of minorities, mexicans, kids and others who will benefit from expanded social programs.

Under this scenario, the democrats are supporting those who will at least spend money in the local economy.
