I know a little about it.
I could explain it..

3 reactor core meltdowns, loss of containment, hydrogen explosions,
radioactive plume, atmospheric transport, fallout, air/land/ocean contamination,
children with thyroid lumps, continual burning of radioactive debris,
lies at every turn, shills out the ass,
missing or manipulated monitor data, collusion, corruption, obfuscation...

And much, much more.

List of nuclear power accidents by country
[link to en.wikipedia.org]

[snip]

Japan

2 Nov 1978
Fukushima No1, Japan
Japan's first criticality accident at No 3 reactor, this accident was hidden for 29 years and reported on 22 Mar 2007

1981
Tsuruga, Japan
Almost 300 workers were exposed to excessive levels of radiation after a fuel rod ruptured during repairs at the Tsuruga Nuclear Power Plant.

December 1995
Tsuruga, Japan
The fast breeder Monju Nuclear Power Plant sodium leak. State-run operator Donen was found to have concealed videotape footage that showed extensive damage to the reactor.

March 1997
Tokaimura, Japan
The Tokaimura nuclear reprocessing plant fire and explosion. 37 workers were exposed to low doses of radiation. Donen later acknowledged it had initially suppressed information about the fire.

18 Jun 1999
Shiga, Japan
A fuel loading system malfunctioned and set off an uncontrolled nuclear reaction and explosion.

September 1999
Tokaimura, Japan
The criticality accident at the Tokai fuel fabrication facility. Hundreds of people were exposed to radiation and two workers later died. This is not a nuclear power plant accident, however.

2002
Onagawa, Japan
Two workers were exposed to a small amount of radiation and suffered minor burns during a fire.

9 Aug 2004
Mihama, Japan
A steam explosion at the Mihama-3 station; the subsequent investigation revealed a serious lack in systematic inspection in Japanese nuclear plants, which led to a massive inspection program.

2006
Fukushima No1, Japan
A small amount of radioactive steam was released at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant and it escaped the compound.

16 Jul 2007
Kashiwazaki, Japan
a severe earthquake (measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale) hit the region where Tokyo Electric's Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant is located and radioactive water spilled into the Sea of Japan; as of March 2009, all of the reactors remain shut down for damage verification and repairs; the plant with seven units was the largest single nuclear power station in the world.

December 2009
Hamaoka, Japan
Leakage accident of Radio active water. 34 workers were exposed to radiation

11 Mar 2011
Fukushima No1, Japan
The world's second INES 7 accident. A magnitude 9.0 earthquake and associated tsunami triggered cooling problems at Fukushima 1 & 2 stations with several reactors. Hydrogen explosions cause structural damage, and loss of coolant results in meltdowns in three units and a fire in overheated spent fuel rods. Radioactive steam was released into the atmosphere, and highly radioactive water spilled into the ocean through utility trenches. Some immediate injuries resulted.

18 Mar 2011
Fukushima No2, Japan
Japanese Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency reported that the condition of reactors #1, #2 and #4 of Fukushima Dai 2 Plant is equivalent to INES level 3.

Discussion with Prof Robert Jacobs on social mobilization in Japan after Fukushima
Published by jagaruttrakhand
Published on Jul 9, 2012

Professor Robert Jacobs, Associate Professor, Hiroshima Peace Institute, Hiroshima City University

At 10:45 in

Jacobs: We have a situation where [Tepco] and also the gov’t of Japan knew they had three full meltdowns the first week… They lied for months to people, they lied for two months… The reason they lied was to keep the word meltdown out of the headlines…

They say this when they know the full core melted…

These are lies, they’re absolutely lies…

They tried to to keep the word meltdown off of the headlines… when Tepco admits there were 3 full meltdowns at Fukushima… it’s not a front page story anywhere around the world… That’s success from their point of view…

[link to sg.news.yahoo.com]

The workers had a recording of their meeting, the newspaper said.

"Unless we hide it with lead, exposure will max out and we cannot work," the executive was heard saying in the recording, the Asahi reported.

Some workers refused to wear it and left the company, the Asahi said.

The workers were hired for about four months through March to insulate pipes at a water treatment facility, Kyodo News said.

The ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare was starting to investigate the matter, newspapers and Jiji Press reported.

Health ministry and Build-Up officials could not be reached for comment.

The conversation recorded in the video shows they were more interested in saving money than saving people’s lives.

The Ongoing Damage and Danger at Fukushima
[link to www.fairewinds.com]

[snip]

HC: Well I mean, the only time they have ever tried to remove melted fuel was at Three Mile Island. And that took them 10 years, did it not?

AG: Yes. And that was easy.

HC: But that really was not melted like the way these 3 have really . . .

AG: Right. TMI had a blob of nuclear fuel on the bottom. But it had not breeched the vessel. All of these vessels have been breeched, the control rods come in at the bottom and they are leaking like a sieve. So it is likely that fuel has oozed out through the control rods, if not burned it's way right out.

It is likely Unit II has burned it's way right out and is now lying on the concrete. And I think that is really the big change . . . , in my view of the problem, is what they are finding in Units I, II, and III now. Let's think of a nuclear reactor as a pressure cooker.

....

AG: So they have contaminated the reactor, the bottom of the containment, the torus, which is that donut-shaped thing, the reactor building which is outside that, the thing that blew up, the floor of that is contaminated, and the building next to it, the turbine hall, should be the least radioactive and it is still a million disintegrations per second per every liter. So my thought is now, considering the extent of this contamination, that it is not fair to the workers to have them going in and clean this. And I think if I were Tokyo Electric's management, a couple of more years out after the cooling is completely done, I would consider filling up those containment buildings with concrete and walking away for 300 years. You know, obviously monitoring it, but I do not think it is fair to the workers to expose them to the extraordinary levels they will receive if they were to try to turn that site back into a green field.

HC: They could not turn it back into a green field. That is ridiculous. But anyway . . .

AG: Yes, you are right. And of course the big concern would be you have got to make sure you have got it all captured and it is not going down into the water table.

HC: But it will, and if you put concrete on it, you know it is going to keep going down into the water table and you know it is going to keep contaminating the Pacific Ocean for the rest of time.

AG: Right. So there is no good solution.

HC: No there is none.

AG: Absolutely no good solution. But the solution would be to bore holes underneath and constantly pull water out from under the building so that whatever leaks down gets treated. So we are still back with these big de-mineralizers again. But to my mind, I could not, as a manager, order a couple of thousand workers to pick up extraordinarily high exposures to dismantle these plants at this point in time.

Discussion with Prof Robert Jacobs on social mobilization in Japan after Fukushima
Published by jagaruttrakhand

The amount of Radioactivity would be endless higher in and around the Daiichi Plant
in the case that the Corium is in the open,
but this is not the case!

The Fuel left only the first Vessel, the Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV)

I beg to differ...

[link to www.ucsusa.org]

[snip]

What is the difference between a meltdown and a loss of containment?

A meltdown occurs when fuel has overheated, melted, and flowed to the bottom of the reactor vessel, where it will burn its way through the steel and then collect on the floor of the primary containment structure.

It is possible to have a meltdown without a loss of primary containment; the containment is designed to hold the melted fuel and its radioactive emissions.

A loss of primary containment occurs when the integrity of the containment structure is compromised, allowing the melted fuel and/or radioactive isotopes to leak into the secondary containment. The loss of secondary containment would allow the melted fuel and/or radioactive isotopes to escape to the outside environment.

Japan: Is the Fukushima No. 2 reactor reheating?
[link to asiancorrespondent.com]

(snip)
In September 2002, TEPCO admitted that it “may have failed to accurately report cracks at its nuclear reactors in the late 1980s and 1990s” and the then-president and vice-president subsequently quit.

The BBC also reported that TEPCO conceded that information had been falsified on over 200 occasions between 1977 and 2002.

But the major concern is that the Japanese government has been turning a blind eye to these goings on. University of Southern California Engineering Professor, Najmedin Meshkati, told PBS: “In one case, they [the government] gave the whistleblower’s name to the utility company. That tells you about culture of regulatory oversight.”

Water inside Fukushima No. 1 reactor may be only 40 cm deep
[link to mainichi.jp]

[snip]

The organization of nuclear experts estimated that the water in the primary containment vessel is only 40 centimeters deep. The utility known as TEPCO has estimated the water level to be about 1.9 meters.
Not disputed is the fact coolant water injected into the reactor is leaking as a result of the accident at the plant.

It assumed gas is leaking from the container's upper part and the coolant water from the lower part.
JNES thinks that the water injected into the reactor may be leaking from a hole located in a section connecting the primary container and the suppression pool, leaving the container with water just 40 cm in depth.

Holes are most likely cracks from over-pressure.

Containment failure.

Been doing some reading.
Cracks in the reactors could have occurred when tepco flooded them with seawater. Reactors 1,2 and 3 were manufactured before the fix. Pre-1971. As far as I can tell from a quick look.

Pressurized Thermal Shock

The thick steel vessel housing the reactor is normally very hot because of the high temperature of the water inside (600°F). If, due to some malfunction, the inside is suddenly filled with cool water, the vessel experiences what is called "thermal shock." If it is then subjected to high pressure — producing pressurized thermal shock (PTS) — there is an increased tendency for the vessel to crack, rather than simply to stretch, if a small crack or imperfection already exists. The importance of PTS problems depends on quantitative details — how much of a thermal shock followed by how much pressure causes how much of an increased tendency to crack. Under ordinary conditions these quantitative details indicate that there is nothing to be concerned about. However, just as radiation can damage biological tissue, it can damage steel by knocking electrons and atoms out of their normal locations. This radiation damage to the reactor vessel aggravates its susceptibility to PTS.

Scientists recognized this problem over 20 years ago and they found a simple remedy for it — reducing the quantity of copper in the steel alloy from which the vessel is fabricated. This remedy was implemented in 1971, and all reactor vessels fabricated since that time have had no problems with PTS.

Reactor vessels fabricated before 1971 are kept under periodic observation to keep track of the problem. For many years, the NRC, burdened by other more urgent problems, put off considering PTS by adopting a very conservative screening criterion to indicate when further action on it would be undertaken. In 1981, time for action according to that criterion was only 1 or 2 years away in some reactors; hence, the NRC began to look into the problem in more detail by requesting information from various power plants.

Groups warn on cracks in nuclear reactor
[link to www.taipeitimes.com]

[snip]

Cracks of up to 30cm have been found on the core shroud of the No.1 reactor at the idled Guosheng Nuclear Power Plant in Wanli District

Lee Kuei-lin a retired Taiwan Power Co (Taipower) employee who had worked at the plant for 33 years, told a press conference yesterday that the Guosheng Nuclear Power Plant had had many instances of sudden emergency shut-downs and the thermal effect from a sudden drop in temperature from 300oC in the reactor core may be the real cause of the cracks.

Similar cases of core shroud cracking were reported at many reactors in Japan in 2002, including the three reactors that had gone into meltdown at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant last year, Green Citizens’ Action Alliance board member Lai Wei-Chieh said, adding that although the power shortage caused by the tsunami and earthquake were blamed for the accident, the possible impacts caused by the cracks should also be explored.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1295673

I see they are now saying Fukushima went into meltdown before the tsunami hit and that a lot of US nuclear plants are considerably more vulnerable than Fukushima!

Well.. it's all bad. The actual fuel didn't melt until the water evaporated.
There is a huge crack in reactor 1 vessel. 3cm is what I understood.
Under pressure, super-heated.. maybe the water spurted out quickly.
I do remember that the pressure rose very quickly.
And there is the issue of the cap bolts stretching under pressure.
Also an issue with welds that hasn't been investigated much..
I guess we'll find out for sure, someday..

Tiny Buggy-Chan,
in my Opinion you are looking for Micro-Holes/ Breaks
which we will find in every single Reactor of this Time and
no matter where they are located,
the Containment is made of Steel and Steel is a Melange,
(and not a single Material but many tiny Parts molten together, sorry no word jet for it)
with thousands of Holes when you look with a E-Microscope,
but when you try to speak about a "Loss of Containment"
we see a open Vessel but this is not the case for the Daiichi Reactor!

Brain shrinkage seen in Tohoku PTSD cases
[link to www.japantimes.co.jp]

[snip]

Emotional stress over last year's deadly quake and tsunami in the Tohoku region caused the brains of some survivors to shrink, according to scientists in Japan who had a unique chance to study the neurological effects of trauma.

On a quest to better understand posttraumatic stress disorder, the researchers compared brain scans they had taken of 42 healthy adolescents in other studies in the two years before the disasters new images taken three to four months after they hit.

Among those with PTSD symptoms, they found a shrinking in the orbitofrontal cortex, a part of the brain involved in decision-making and the regulation of emotion, according to a study published Tuesday in Molecular Psychiatry, a branch of Nature.
