Computer Question - No Sound
OK... I am at wits end, so I have decided to turn to GLP.

I am working on a laptop. I have reinstalled Win 7 because it had a bad HDD from being dropped. I got everything installed drivers-wise without too many problems.

BUT

I have no sound. I have tried a few newer and older drivers, didn't help.

When I play a file, I can see the audio meters functioning, so I know that is working.

I ran DXDIAG, my device is detected and theoretically I have no problems.

I have tried headphones, doesn't work either.

This has an HDMI port, but it uses a separate set of drivers.

Is there anything I am missing here?

Start-Control Panel-Sound....see which the OS is using as DEFAULT device, and choose accordingly

I mean, enable/disable the one you want, probably using HDMI as default device, just disable it and enable your other, on board sound

Re: Computer Question - No Sound
My laptop used to do this from time to time, so I googled it.... turn it off, take out the battery, put the battery back in, voila, it works.

You're welcome!

Re: Computer Question - No Sound
Is your sound provided by the motherboard or a seperate card?

I have to reseat my soundcard from time to time...it doesn't plug in to the pci port very well.

It's a laptop....Not many "do it yourselfers" even know where to begin taking that off, and laptops have had built in sound devices for a while now..You are thinking about a desktop

I have done all of the obvious - check mutes, levels, device selection....

Uninstalled drivers, rebooted.

I did try that battery removal trick, didn't work. lol

Re: Computer Question - No Sound
What was original OS for that laptop? I've seen ones that won't work with 7, even though it installs, because hardware only has xp drivers. Did you make sure what designation of OS was, x86 or x64? That could be a problem as well.

^^ This, you're missing a sound driver. Go to the website for your computer and download the exe file for it. It will be there.

Sorry should have said, instead of trying new or older drivers use the one from your computer/model website.

Re: Computer Question - No Sound
I have one other suggestion, a bit strange so bear with me. If you are already using the correct driver directly from the website that matches your comp, try plugging in some earphones. I once had a very confused computer that thought speakers were plugged in when they weren't. Some kind of short. Don't ask me how or why but plugging in headphones then pulling them out again fixed it.
