Local mom and pop shops selling domestically made merchandise. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25761338 great thinking. we make homemade breads, cookies, etc... for the family and friends. Always appreciated. I totally agree. No one does that anymore. I used to think it sucked ass that my grandma gave me hand knitted mittens, scarves and touques every Christmas. Now I would give anything to have them again. Even those brick Christmas cakes ... actually no ... I don't' miss the Christmas cake bricks. — read for knowledge, not answers. |

Quoting: MelvinKartinWeatherGenius And why would I want to punish my wife and kids during the holidays? My wife and kids are going to have a great Christmas. Go consumerism! It's the American way. I'm pretty sure buying my kids new coats, shoes, clothes and things that they would need/use any other time of the year is just fine. Is it ok if we spend money after Christmas or is that evil too? No one said anything about it being evil. But it does help feed the beast..After Christmas sales are great... People don't have the money for such things these days, you know the working poor? During Carter's four horrid years... can you imagine if he had been reelected? Guess we're about to see just how bad it could have been, much like today.. broke.. We got one button down shirt a piece for Christmas and not one of us complained about it, that was it..but then we weren't used to having much during those bad times, we had food, a small home, family and three new shirts. Oh and wonderful Christmas time... Last Edited by ceawaves on 11/08/2012 09:43 PM |

If you wait until after christmas, then you are not spending it on christmas but on good sales. I shop the summer sales when the winter things come out and in January the summer clothes start coming out and that is the time to buy winter clothes for deep discounts. |

If you want to make hand-made gifts - that's great too. As a former small business owner, I so appreciated people coming into my shop to buy local. Because of this, I was able to do the same for them. It's what makes the world go 'round. The main thing is don't forget what Christmas means. Every family is different - if some choose not to exchange gifts - nothing wrong with that. As long as your motive is about less materialism and not about punishing. |

Who doesn't like food? I make cookies and special cakes and gift those. Majority of what I purchase is clothes or books. Useful things..at least in my opinion. We don't go crazy in my household. Same for the Christmas tree <<< Cause pretty sure you don't know that either.. |
