Made wine and had some questions about strength???
Made a white wine last year and have four bottles left in storage - private reserve after handing them out. This year I am making a red wine and oh, does it taste and smell good!! Anyways, the other day was a special occassion and I cracked open a bottle of the white wine from last year. Tasted excellent, but I noticed that ONE small glass almost put me on my ass! What gives? I'm not a light weight to alcohol, and wine has normally never done that to me. Final ALC% was around 18% when calculated before bottling. Thoughts? Thanks!

Did you add any sugar at the final corking?

Just sounds to me like your yeastie-beasties were extra hungry.

I would keep ALL rackings just for a culture that made 18% first time around.

Good Job

Each time a person stands for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he or she sends forth a tiny ripple of hope. And crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance. Few are willing to embrace the disapproval of their fellows, the censure of their colleagues, the wrath of their society. Moral courage is a rarer commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligence. Yet it is the one essential vital quality for those who seek to change a world that yields most painfully to change. I added the sweetner and yeast killer bottle that the DIY booze store sells, not sure what it is called. Like I said, it knocked me on my ass, a very INTENSE high feeling almost, VERY strange. Tequila, everclear, etc., has never done that to me with one drink...

Nope, just a vine that has been growing in my backyard. Bought the white grape vine at a nursery years ago, and every year we get about ~70 lbs of grapes...

I believe 18% is as high as you can go and even that is often difficult to achieve. The higher alcohol content kills the yeast.

Yes. I am just trying to figure out how one small glass induced an intense high feeling, like nothing I have felt before? It tasted good, so I know it was not due to bad wine. I did not use that much sulphides, kept them down as I know some are allergic. Strange thing is, I had a bottle after corking it a year ago, and nothing. My sig other even had a little an noticed the massive euphoric feeling... thoughts???

Re: Made wine and had some questions about strength???
That would be the equivalent to a port wine wine there op.Normal alcohol level should be around 8-12% with wine kits if that is what you used

Sorry, not sure what a "port wine" is? Is that basically du to the high ALC%? Would that cause a Euphoric feeling? Like I said, I have drank tequila etc with higher ALC% and never felt anything quite like this...

I really don't know offhand what could do that, but if you'd send me a bottle I can do some research.
