Ecuador's President Says CIA is Using Drug Profits to Destabilize His Country
Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa said stories about US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) efforts to destabilize his government and hinder his reelection are credible.

During a television-broadcast interview with journalist Jorge Gestoso, Correa referred to stories presented by UK ex-Ambassador to Uzbekistan Craig Murray and the Chilean journalist Patricio Mery Bell and said they are credible because there are historical precedents. . .

Correa also referred to the story by Chilean journalist Patricio Mary Bell about apparent CIA and DEA operations to import 300 kilograms of drugs monthly to Chile to finance the destabilization of the Ecuadorian government..

He stated that it was a similar case to the Iran-Contras scandal, by means of which resources from illegal weapon sale to Iran were embezzled to finance the counter-revolution in Nicaragua. . .

Correa believes it is feasible that the CIA is a superstructure that acts independently from its government and without public scrutiny. . .

Correa was warned that the CIA will invest more than $ 80 million to try that Correa is not reelected in the elections of February.

According to the Ecuadorian president, that money would go to “buy journalists, making a fuss, to destabilize the government of Correa” and prevent his reelection.

US Ambassador Denies His Country is Interfering in Ecuadorean Elections..

The U.S. Ambassador in Ecuador, Adam Namm, denied on Monday that his country plans to interfere in the elections next February Ecuadorians to prevent the reelection of President Rafael Correa, as a former British diplomat reported.

"It is completely untrue, there are many people who say many things, especially on the Internet. We are not involved in the democratic process in Ecuador, we respect democracy, "said Namm...

Re: Ecuador's President Says CIA is Using Drug Profits to Destabilize His Country
Slightly OT - The CIA (and US covert ops) also support "democracy"

Recent Example - The NGOs of the Arab Spring....(from Bani Walid Libya Thread)...

In December 2011, Egyptian authorities raided "pro-democracy” NGOs, including 4 U.S.-based agencies. . . Freedom House; the National Democratic Institute (NDI); the International Republican Institute (IRI); and the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ). . .

The NDI and IRI are “core institutions” of the National Endowment for Democracy (NED). NED is a non-profit, grant-making institution that receives more than 90 percent of its annual budget from the U.S. government. While Freedom House claims to be independent, it regularly receives the majority of its funding from the NED. . .

Freedom House has also been accused of running programs of regime destabilization in U.S. “enemy states.” A 1996 Financial Times article revealed that Freedom House was one of several organizations selected by the State Department to receive funding for “clandestine activities” inside Iran, including training and funding groups seeking regime change, an act that received criticism from Iranian grass-roots pro-democracy groups....

The NED was founded in 1983 when Washington was embroiled in numerous controversies relating to covert military operations and the training and funding of paramilitaries and death squads in Central and South America. It was formed to create an open and legal avenue for the U.S. government to channel funds to opposition groups against unfavorable regimes around the world, thus removing the political stigma associated with covert CIA funding. In a 1991 Washington Post article, “Innocence Abroad: The New World of Spyless Coups,” Allen Weinstein (who helped draft the legislation that established the NED) declared: “A lot of what we [the NED] do today was done covertly 25 years ago by the CIA.”

You may have heard of a guy named President Kennedy. That's what happens when you fuck with the CIA without going all the way.

Going all the way is calling a big meeting with every CIA officer above the second pay grade, then bombing the meeting hall and killing every last one of those fuckers. Nobody has the stomach to do it right. Short of that, forget it.

Correa Alleges that Chilean Reporter Set Up Like Wikileaks' Julian Assange...

Correa said another complaint in the same tone appeared this week when the Chilean journalist Patricio Mery Bell warned of an alleged international plot to destabilize the Government of Ecuador and restore U.S. hegemony in the region.

Mery Bell has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a woman who, according to Correa, would be "a trap, because he denounced illegal dealings, including drug" by the CIA and the DEA "to try to destabilize the government of Ecuador."

"Too much coincidence, right?" Asked the president to compare both complaints.

CORREA's "HISTORY" - CIA's DECLASSIFIED Report on its actions in Guatemala...

[link to www.cia.gov (secure)]

. . . Following its 1944 revolution, which brought democratically elected leftist governments to power, this Central American government faced an increasingly hostile neighbor to the north, the United States. Guatemala's treatment of US-based corporations, especially the United Fruit Company, in expropriating land and other assets, did nothing to improve relations...

What unfolded in May and June of 1954 is now a familiar story in US intelligence and diplomatic history: Washington used the CIA and US Ambassador John Peurifoy to support and direct certain Guatemalan military leaders in overthrowing Arbenz's government. It was also psychological warfare--cleverly deceptive efforts to persuade Guatemala's citizens and political/military leaders that a major invasion force was steadily moving toward the nation's capital so unnerved Arbenz and others that the government fell without much of a battle. ...

While the overthrow of Arbenz was unfolding, the US government pretended to have nothing to do with it. In the year or so after President Castillo Armas's anti-Communist government was brought into power with Agency assistance, CIA quietly judged that his government was "inept," despite his "virtually dictatorial powers," and that there were growing "public demands for a return to constitutional democracy." Still, while American news reports and Congressional debates began to acknowledge that the United States had been involved, the overthrow became one of CIA's "well-known successes." ...

Correa's History - CIA Establishes Death Squads in El Salvador...

Death Squads in El Salvador:A Pattern of U.S. Complicity
Covert Action Quarterly, Summer 1990

[link to www.thirdworldtraveler.com]

In 1963, the U.S. government sent 10 Special Forces personnel to El Salvador to help General Jose Alberto Medrano set up the Organizacion Democratica Nacionalista (ORDEN)-the first paramilitary death squad in that country. These Green Berets assisted in the organization and indoctrination of rural "civic" squads which gathered intelligence and carried out political assassinations in coordination with the Salvadoran military.

Now, there is compelling evidence to show that for over 30 years, members of the U.S. military and the CIA have helped organize, train, and fund death squad activity in El Salvador. . . It is important to point out that the use of death squads has been a strategy of U.S. counterinsurgency doctrine. . .

Part of the U.S. counterinsurgency program was run from the Office of Public Safety (OPS). OPS was part of U.S. AID, and worked with the Defense Department and the CIA to modernize and centralize the repressive capabilities of client state police forces, including those in El Salvador. In 1974 Congress ordered the discontinuation of OPS.

In spite of the official suspension of police assistance between 1974 and 1985, CIA and other U.S . officials worked with Salvadoran security forces throughout the restricted period to centralize and modernize surveillance, to continue training, and to fund key players in the death squad network. . .

Correa's History - CIA Uses Cocaine Profits in Nicaragua...

George Washington University's National Security Archive Electronic Briefing Book
The Contras, Cocaine,and Covert Operations

An August, 1996, series in the San Jose Mercury News by reporter Gary Webb linked the origins of crack cocaine in California to the contras, a guerrilla force backed by the Reagan administration that attacked Nicaragua's Sandinista government during the 1980s. Webb's series, "The Dark Alliance," has been the subject of intense media debate, and has focused attention on a foreign policy drug scandal that leaves many questions unanswered.

This electronic briefing book is compiled from declassified documents obtained by the National Security Archive, including the notebooks kept by NSC aide and Iran-contra figure Oliver North, electronic mail messages written by high-ranking Reagan administration officials, memos detailing the contra war effort, and FBI and DEA reports. The documents demonstrate official knowledge of drug operations, and collaboration with and protection of known drug traffickers. Court and hearing transcripts are also included.

Thanks for sharing this!!

I wish they would just leave Equador alone!

It's a beautiful country, housing cost and food cost are low there.

I am truly thinking of moving to Cuenca. The weather is great all year round and there is excellent transportation and walking is easy and enjoyable there also.
