The solar storm that NASA is warning about in 2012 could cause 100s if not 1000s of nuclear plant meltdowns. The US has 107. As a huge loss of power would force plants to use backup power, These plants only have weeks worth AT THE MOST. A large solar storm will cause worldwide blackouts for months maybe years. Counties like India, the US and China have grids that are primitive and all have many nuclear power plants.

"Impacts would be felt on interdependent infrastructures with, for example, potable water distribution affected within several hours; perishable foods and medications lost in 12-24 hours; immediate or eventual loss of heating/air conditioning, sewage disposal, phone service, transportation, fuel resupply and so on," the report states.

Outages could take months to fix, the researchers say. Banks might close, and trade with other countries might halt.

This is an old story? First link is dated February 2, 2011 and the second looks like a rehash of the first.
Anyway, we all know it could happen, but at the moment a Carrington Event scale cme is thought to occur once every 500 years. Obviously that is an estimate based on ice core data iirc., and could be wrong.
The point of having an early warning system would be to give us time to isolate vulnerable parts of the grid, but I'm not sure that is possible with geomagnetic storm induced residual currents, maybe someone is fishing for a budget increase?
