Very effective, safe, efficient. Makes all the difference in an electrical grid deprived situation with regard to creature comforts (hot water for bathing), cooking (even heating canned foods vs cold makes a big difference in basic quality of life). That is first line here in hurricane country for us. We're already, "bugged out," compared to many who post here about, "bugging out." The vids show a valid second line. I'll have to make up some of those. |

Yeah I agree, there are these aluminum(I think) catfood cans and they are perfect for the tiny alcohol stove. Also I can confirm that the heet is the good fuel. |

They sell small bottles of it for putting in your gas tank to dry out water that might get in the tank. Its sold and known as heet. But what you really want is High Percent Alcohol. You can buy a Gallon of Denatured alcohol and it would be much cheaper then buying a Gallon of Heet. Denatured Alcohol is a highly rectified Alcohol that has been made non potable for man. So its perfect for using as a fuel but not good for drinking. Its about 98 % pure so its just as good of a fuel as Heet is because its the same thing, just you buy it under a different name to get a better price. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1110734 United States 11/09/2012 07:35 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I encourage you to write about prepping, but I hope you'll find better ways to cook and boil water. Alcohol is not easily made, nor is it abundant in a collapse. The bootleggers who are making ethanol will find it hilarious that you used it for cooking fires. It will be too pricy to consider using it this way when the SHTF. If you're set up to produce rubbing alcohol for a distillery, and can produce it of sufficient purity and concentration, then I recommend you sell it at a premium price. Anyone who needs to clean wound sites is going to beat down your door and pay top dollar for it. Again, I doubt anyone will waste what little rubbing alcohol they have for cooking small amounts of food. Instead, if you're serious about prepping and educating non-preppers, I'd teach people how to make a common rocket stove out of bricks. See this video: This material is commonly found in most neighborhoods. Many people use brick and brushed in sand to make a patio. They can be cheaply purchased at many home improvement businesses. This method is taught to people in 3rd world countries. It produces a very hot flame and far less than normal wood. Twigs are ideal. If you want to make a field stove, then construct a Dakota Hole fire. A better Dakota Hole stove would come in from the side to feed the flame, but then you have to deal with the local terrain. This kind of fire produces a less noticeable fire since the flames are below ground. It produces less smoke too. It's actually a crude form of rocket stove. When finished, fill in the dirt to have less people notice your activity. Then spread around local debris and leaves. If you want to produce a consistant rocket stove, then build one out of tin cans and sand. If you have extra money, then vermiculite is supposed to be better. Here's a cheap rocket stove made in this fashion: Nice guy on that last video. He attempted several kinds to improve the design. I'd put a handle on it with an insulator since it's hot and then it's easier to move safely. These are far superior techniques than an alcohol stove. Not a criticism, as I'm glad that anyone is raising awareness. These rocket stoves make great Christmas presents. Every homeowner could have one, and then just in case they're set up for outdoor cooking. Backpackers will love you for making them one as some aren't good at constructing things. The sand can be taken out and they can use dirt from the campsite to cut down on weight. |

Where is the best place to buy denatured alcohol? The Hardware Store. Yes, they actually sell small Alcohol Lamps that you can use inside the house. There is no smell at all and yes its safe, its alcohol. You know what alcohol is. Its just a highly rectified alcohol. Which means its more pure and of a higher quality. Lower quality alcohol is watered down with water. That is why its not good as a fuel. The stuff you need as fuel is the purified stuff. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1110734 United States 11/09/2012 07:49 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | In a collapse, many people will need woodstoves. If everyone is burning inefficiently in a neighborhood, then the wood will rapidly be wasted, and people will have to travel ever widening circles for firewood. Instead, a permaculture means of producing heat (plus a cook stove and hot water) is to make a rocket mass heater. See here: [link to www.richsoil.com] It is extremely efficient, cheaply made, and produces little smoke (and mostly steam). One could burn about 1/7 the amount of wood to produce the same BTUs. Some people even built in a oven, which only makes sense. |

If you have trouble getting the top to slide over the bottom part, you can make little bends along the bottom edge to get the top started over it. I do them all that way now and it makes no difference in the quality of the stove. |
