Yeah right, like flying in an airplane with a cracked wing isnt serious either. Way to downplay a serious disaster in the works. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 26889255 You are not allowed to run a small steam loco with a crack in the boiler in my country. But .. hey a crack in the boiler of a nuclear plant .. do not worry. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27374412 There are safer nuclear reactors that could have been used since day one. One's that can burn the fuel much more efficently, but guess what, no weapons grade plutonium as a by product. Nor, does it use uranium but thorium which is more plentiful and more easily mined. Instead, man chose wealth and power. Imagine that! Could you please explain the free energy that is all around us? |

S.Korea nuclear contractor jailed for parts scam Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1295673 [link to www.sundaytimes.lk] [snip] The man, identified only as Hwang, was sentenced last Friday for selling recycled turbine valve parts to the Gori nuclear plant near Busan, the Busan District Court spokesman said. Hwang, 54, cleaned and painted used parts stolen from the plant's dump by an employee. He then sold them back to the plant, on three occasions since 2008, disguising them as new products. Hwang pocketed some three billion won ($2.6 million) through the fraud, according to the court. ~ Makes you wonder if that crap is happening here, too... ~ Nuclear engineer gets prison sentence Quoting: Anonymous Coward 11432405 The Ulsan District Prosecutors’ Office said Tuesday that it arrested and indicted 22 senior officials of the state-run nuclear energy company on charges of taking bribes from subcontractors. The indicted officials of the Korea Hydro Nuclear Power (KHNP) are two vice presidents and four senior managers at the company’s headquarter in Seoul, and 16 manager-level engineers at local plants. This is the first time that more than 20 senior officials from one state firm have been arrested in a single corruption case. The arrest came amid a series of bribery allegations involving the KHNP employees since February, when there was a power outage at a reactor of the Gori-1 Nuclear Power Plant in Busan. Korea nuclear reactor Quoting: Anonymous Coward 11432405 SEOUL, South Korea – A South Korean nuclear reactor went into automatic shutdown on Monday apparently after a malfunction, plant operators said, while ruling out a possible radiation leak. The 1,000-megawatt reactor at Yeonggwang some 260 kilometres (156 miles) south of Seoul halted operations after warning signals around 3:00 pm (0600 GMT), the state-run Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power said. An investigation was under way to determine the cause of the shutdown, it said, adding there was no danger of a radiation leak. [link to newsinfo.inquirer.net] . South Korea to restart oldest nuclear reactor Quoting: Anonymous Coward 11432405 South Korea’s oldest nuclear reactor is set to restart after a four-month closure, despite strong opposition from local residents and activists. The Kori-1 reactor in Busan was shut down on 13 March, after it was revealed that the reactor and its emergency generator had temporarily lost power during routine maintenance the month before, causing the coolant temperature to rise. Nuke reactor malfunctions, shuts down at power plant Quoting: Anonymous Coward 11432405 A nuclear reactor at one of South Korea's nuclear power plants automatically shut down Sunday after its reactor protection system gave warning signals, plant operators said. The Shin (New) Wolsong 1 reactor, located some 371 kilometers southeast of Seoul, was shut down at 10:53 a.m. due to the malfunction of a system that controls power output, according to an official from the state-run Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. Uljin Nuclear Power Plant Reactor Shuts Down Quoting: Anonymous Coward 11432405 A reactor at the Uljin Nuclear Power Plant in Uljin, North Gyeongsang Province, shut down on Thursday. State-run operator Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power said a reactor stopped operating at 6:41 p.m. after firing off a warning signal. [link to www.nucpros.com] . Should Wolsong-1 reactor shut down? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 9859977 Frequent malfunctions of a 29-year-old nuclear reactor in Korea have reignited a backlash against the government’s move to extend its use for anther ten years. Environmentalists and activists are calling for the immediate shutdown of the Wolsong-1 reactor in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, claiming extended use of what they called the “accident-prone” reactor could lead to a nuclear disaster as seen in Japan’s Fukushima last year. [link to www.koreatimes.co.kr] . Two S. Korea nuclear reactors shut down Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24001598 SEOUL (AFP) - Two South Korean 1,000-megawatt nuclear reactors were shut down Tuesday at separate plants, both as a result of unrelated systems malfunctions, operators said. The state-run Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power (KHNP) said there was no apparent danger of a radiation leak at either reactor -- at Yeonggwang on the southwest coast and Shingori on the southeast coast. [link to www.nucpros.com] . Key info omitted from nuclear reactor assessment Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24001598 Kori nuclear plant is already living on borrowed time and prone to malfunction It belatedly came to light that the core damage frequency (CDF) of reactor No.1 at the Kori Nuclear Power Plant in Busan exceeded International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) standards. The core of a reactor generates radioactive substances in large quantities. The initial 30-year lifespan of the aged nuclear reactor expired and was extended by 10 years in January 2008. The Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), which operates the reactor, intentionally omitted these facts in its report on the proposed extension of the core. [link to english.hani.co.kr] . Unproven parts in S.Korean nuclear reactors Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24001598 South Korea has announced plans to immediately shut down 2 nuclear reactors to replace thousands of parts that were shipped with fabricated warranties. The Knowledge Economy Ministry revealed to reporters on Monday that 8 parts suppliers have been faking their warranties since 2003. A total of 5,233 such parts are reportedly in use in 5 nuclear reactors. The ministry says the parts in question were "ordinary" things such as fuses and power switches, and are unrelated to the reactors themselves. It maintains that the parts will not cause radiation leaks. [link to www3.nhk.or.jp] . |

Where do they get the balls to lie like bastards about these things..? [link to edition.cnn.com] [snip] The utility Korean Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP) said it detected microscopic cracks in six control rod tunnels at Unit 3 of its Yonggwang nuclear plant in the southwest of the country. Control rods are used to regulate the speed of nuclear reactions taking place inside reactors. "The cracks are not serious and there is no risk of radiation leakage," said Jang Yong-jin, head of the mechanics department at KHNP. The cracks themselves are not a serious issue and have been found at reactors in such other countries as the United States and Japan, said Jae Moo-sung, a professor in the nuclear engineering department of Hanyang University. FERMI: MANUAL REACTOR SHUTDOWN DUE TO HYDROGEN IN-LEAKAGE TO STATOR WATER COOLING SYSTEM Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24001598 At 09:21 EST 11/7/12, the reactor mode switch was taken to shutdown and the main turbine generator was manually tripped in response to hydrogen gas in-leakage into the stator water cooling system from the main turbine generator. The scram was uncomplicated, and all control rods, except one, fully inserted into the core. One control rod stopped at position 02 and was manually inserted. The lowest reactor vessel water level reached was 125 inches, and as expected, HPCI & RCIC did not actuate. No safety relief valves (SRV) actuated. Reactor water level is being controlled in the normal band using the control rod drive and reactor feedwater systems. All isolations and actuations for reactor water level 3 occurred as expected.
