Bitter cold inside a disaster shelter...."We got f--ked!"
We stood and talked in the cool morning air a short distance up the road after security at the front gate threatened to have our cars removed outside the entrance to what Sotelo’s identification tag calls “Camp Freedom,” even though it more closely resembles a prison camp.

“Sitting there last night you could see your breath,” said Sotelo. “At (Pine Belt) the Red Cross made an announcement that they were sending us to permanent structures up here that had just been redone, that had washing machines and hot showers and steady electric, and they sent us to tent city. We got (expletive). (Fucked)

“The elections are over and here we are. There were Blackhawk helicopters flying over all day and night. They have heavy equipment moving past the tents all night.”

No media is allowed inside the fenced complex...

As Sotelo tells it, when it became clear that the residents were less than enamored with their new accommodations Wednesday night and were letting the outside world know about it, officials tried to stop them from taking pictures, turned off the WiFi and said they couldn’t charge their smart phones because there wasn’t enough power.

“Until 11 (Wednesday) night they had no medical personnel at all here, not even a nurse. After everyone started complaining and they found out we were contacting the press, they brought people in. Every time we plugged in an iPhone or something, the cops would come and unplug them. Yet when they moved us in they laid out cable on the table and the electricians told us they were setting up charging stations. But suddenly there wasn’t enough power.”

Just a big test run.

Sympathy for the people caught in the lie, though. :-( They had no idea even though the information was available to them -- no one thinks its 'real' until it happens to them.

Unless they are a GLPer of course.

So now we know how people will be treated in a disaster under the Obama administration.

I dread next year's hurricane season.

No media is allowed inside the fenced complex, which houses operations for JCP&L’s army of workers from out of the area. The FEMA website indicated on Monday that there had been a shelter for first responders, utility and construction workers to take a break, although the compound now contains a full-time shelter operated by the state Department of Human Services.

OF COURSE NOT.

That is all.

Of course you're going to find people that are unhappy sleeping on a fucking cot.

But all schools in NYC have heaters and they were turned on September 15th.

If they're cold its because they are near a fucking door and people are going in and out to smoke.

Disgusting.

DHS gets close to 40 Billion a year - yet we STILL can't cover a relatively isolated disaster (country-wise). I wonder where all that money is going.

So they make you stay in these shelters which barely provide any services, and won't let them return to their homes? "Camp Freedom" that name sounds familiar.

awww gee, i had to have cable tv with the deluxe nfl package, so no, i couldn't save for a disaster like this, to pay for a hotel room for a few weeks, besides, it's the governments responsibility to care for me, wah, i'm just a lost little sheeple, help me

this is america, so we should be staying in a nice hotel that the government pays for, they can just print the money needed to pay for it, what good is being a citizen of a free country if they don't give you things for free, that's not a free country, so keep america free, give freedom

I wish somebody would send the memo to private contractors and big corporations that government 'help' is bad....because they LOVE IT...they spend BILLIONS lobbying government for subsidies, bailouts, the right to write the regulations and laws [which are designed to prevent abuse similar to what was rampant in the past] that control their industries, lucrative government contracts, etc.,

I'm no fan of a welfare state [although I do believe in a social safety net], but the people who whine the most about it are often silent about the biggest welfare momma's of all: corporations and insider private businesses.

WTF??

“My 6-year-old daughter Angie was a premie and has a problem regulating her body temperature,” Sotelo noted. “Until 11 (Wednesday) night they had no medical personnel at all here, not even a nurse. After everyone started complaining and they found out we were contacting the press, they brought people in. Every time we plugged in an iPhone or something, the cops would come and unplug them. I hope you lose everything someday in a disaster, and then maybe you'd have half a heart.

Having heat/ GOOD shelter is something that every person should have, period. This is ridiculous.
