awww gee, i had to have cable tv with the deluxe nfl package, so no, i couldn't save for a disaster like this, to pay for a hotel room for a few weeks, besides, it's the governments responsibility to care for me, wah, i'm just a lost little sheeple, help me

this is america, so we should be staying in a nice hotel that the government pays for, they can just print the money needed to pay for it, what good is being a citizen of a free country if they don't give you things for free, that's not a free country, so keep america free, give freedom

I hope you lose everything someday in a disaster, and then maybe you'd have half a heart.

Having heat/ GOOD shelter is something that every person should have, period. This is ridiculous.

Totally agree but it is your responsibility to take care of yourself not the governments. I konw a few people in Jersey, they are not complaining about the government not giving them everything becuase they knew a hurricane was coming and prepared for it. they didn't sit around waiting on the government.

For crying out loud. They have shelter. They may not be toasty warm BUT they're surviving which, by the looks of it, is their typical white trash lifestyle. When you live at the edge of poverty on welfare and disaster strikes you will find yourself in a tent. That's the best that can be expected when you don't work, have no friends and no savings He should be grateful. That he's not, shows why he's where he's at in the first place.

Not everyone is edumacated or has even the opportunity to have enough money to prepped. Not all of them are "white trash" either, a lot of actual working middle class people in there. When your house gets flooded and shit blows all over the place it doesn't matter. YOu're homeless for the time. These shelters are death traps. And they are also designed to get people ready for prison camp style living for the po'.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 20581494

NO ONE IN THAT SHELTER IS MIDDLE CLASS. They are all lower class. When your house gets flooded and you're middle class, you call the insurance agent and move to a hotel or the home of a friend/relative. When you are lower class, you call FEMA and then bitch because your cot broke and you're cold. He's ungrateful and that's why he's where he is.

Re: Bitter cold inside a disaster shelter...."We got f--ked!"
WHAT IS WRONG WITH EVERYONE....????? We have seen numerous disasters over the years and its very very clear that we have to have a personal plan in place. One needs to have several days of supplies on hand, blankets, flashlights, solar radio's, an emergency kit....to get you through the first days. It is absolutely impossible to mobilize mass support immediately. Think about it before you start moaning and groaning about the situation you might find yourself in. How does that help anyone?

You also have to have a plan about when to get your butt out of the area and find shelter elsewhere. You cannot sit there having a pity party waiting for someone to put you in a luxury hotel. It doesnt work like that.

I saw a newsclip on CNN the other night about a family just sitting in their battered home waiting for someone to tell them what to do. They were exhausted and cold. But they made no attempt to take their children out of harms way and leave the disaster zone behind. They claimed that there were looters in the area. SO WHAT? Youre home is uninhabitable, whatever remains is not worth protecting. So, gather up what might be meaningful and go. Be responsible and stop whining. You arent the only person having this experience. And do not expect to be rescued.

And do not consider rebuilding in the same place. Climate change is real and it does not make sense to try and recreate homes/businesses in an area that could be wiped out anytime.

Sandy is a wake up call....one of many we have had over the past years. Be prepared for anything.... Be responsible for yourself and your family.
 Quoting: shineon

You are so totally correct. I cannot believe how many were unprepared for this. We had days of warning, everyone knew where there would be mandatory evacuations. I was prepared, had all the supplies needed, and a contingency plan in case we had to leave. If I had small children, I'd have even more things in place. Go figure.

When FEMA tricks people so that they do not prepare, that's the part that proves evil is a motivation, not just limited resources.

All you people (using that term broadly) saying these pathetic creatures should have prepared -- FEMA tricked them. Ordered them out of their houses, probably, put them in an enclosed shelter, then moved them to worse conditions they surely had not prepared for.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27304459

FEMA tricked them to begin with by saying to store 3 days food and water while knowing damn well they could not adequately respond to a widespread disaster in that short time.

I looked on zillow.com at the prices of houses for sale in that town. They are mostly over $500,000. This is of course left-over data from before the storm (it's pretty funny to look at a picture of a pretty $1.3 million waterfront house and realize it is surely no more), but it tells us that it's at least a middle-class place. How could you be living in a house worth over $300,000 and not be called middle class?

Maybe they didn't have private flood insurance. Or maybe they did, but it's actually Federal flood insurance sold thru private companies, which is how I am told they do it. And maybe that Federal flood insurance's solution to this problem is to fall back on the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Do you have any specific knowledge adequate to answer my questions?

Wow. I thought more folks were beyond the left vs right paradigm bullshit here (remember.. social engineering? divide and conquer?) If peeps on a conspiracy website can't even see this, we are truly fucked.

It really doesn't matter if you've prepped and stock piled does it, if your house is totally destroyed.

Do you really believe Romney would have managed this differently?

So many hateful, self righteous assholes on this thread. Really sad. :(
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 3041808

The real problem is the electrical grid, and the utility companies unable to repair, reestablish service. Their total neglect of infrastructure and ill preparedness is creating the bottleneck for people to return to their homes...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27142624

Are you drinking the kool aid being served by Gov. Cuomo?

The only way to "prepare" for this disaster, utility-wise, would have been to bury all the lines underground. That would have helped in a lot of places including where I am.

Should they have buried all the lines in old neighborhoods in a 100 mile radius of NYC? Was money provided to pay for it? Should it have been included in the rate base? Would the utility commission have approved the rate case to do that?

Sometimes a disaster occurs that overcomes your infrastructure, whatever that infrastructure is. In fact, if you build a different infrastructure and you believe as I do that this was weather used as a weapon, then the event would have been modified to exploit the weaknesses of THAT infrastructure. When your infrastructure is defeated, you have to scramble, act intelligently, and I thought it could go unsaid that you should not sabotage the victims.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27304459

Nevertheless, the real problem is reestablishing the electrical grid. And there is a host of problems with the damage, with Con Ed et al, with relying on a management team that doesnt have the resources, or know how to get things up and running. They are overwhelmed and ill prepared, obviously. What I cant understand is who is monitoring them. Does the governor/mayor/Prez simply expect progress reports, or are they getting more involved supplying know how, manpower, equipment??

Do you have any specific knowledge adequate to answer my questions?

You want to show me the $300k house this loser on disability owns??? Tell me the name of his insurance agent??? You're saying he has money for a $300k house but no money in savings to find adequate shelter for his family??? This man is a failure as a husband and father and he's blaming FEMA.

For what I know people who "own" a house have the least disposible income: most of it goes to mortgage, maintenance and taxes.

Then they were stupid and greedy and overbought for their income. Qualifying for a mortgage doesn't mean one can afford it.

The guy interviewed in the article is not middle class, nor did he own the home. Read it, it says he is on disability and a renter.

I own my home. less than 25% of my income goes to mortgage, maintenace and taxes. But i was smart enough to not buy a house that i could not afford. What a concept that is.

Good for you! And if disaster strikes you'll be able to recover more quickly than you otherwise would have. No more than 25% of disposable income should go to shelter. If you have to, live in a studio apt, get roommates, live with family.

Re: Bitter cold inside a disaster shelter...."We got f--ked!"

 Quoting: Ralph--a house dog

FEMA tricked them??? If they are so stupid and incompetent they need FEMA to tell them what to do they don't deserve any better.

Have at least 1 months supply of food and other necessities. Don't depend on government, they are not your friend.
 Quoting: INK3

Fridge is out, the electricity is out, the gas is out. No water. Well, I guess you could eat potatoe chips, peanut butter, dried fruit. But who is prepared for total power and energy outage esp if your house is damaged? I am, but my gas is NOT piped in, I have a cylinder that lasts 2 months. I have a rain barrel that (when it isnt raining) refills every second day from the overflow up on the roof from the city. I live in a warm area, so dont have to worry about heat. My house is fire proof, made of cement and tile. I have well supplied markets nearby from a agricultural workforce that never stops. I have a garden, well endowed with compost and the all year weather that produces some basic necessities. Each month I refill my 20 gallon potable water bottle, and never depend on drinking water from the tap. It isnt necessary to spend extra and worry about storage or recycling goods, or being prepared or supporting a wasteful lifestyle when disaster strikes -- this is my routine,,,

I am fortunate, but I had to move out of the super sophisticated hyper dependent vulnerable infrastructure of the first world, and feel pity when it all goes wrong...
