Re: Bitter cold inside a disaster shelter...."We got f--ked!"
When FEMA tricks people so that they do not prepare, that's the part that proves evil is a motivation, not just limited resources.

All you people (using that term broadly) saying these pathetic creatures should have prepared -- FEMA tricked them. Ordered them out of their houses, probably, put them in an enclosed shelter, then moved them to worse conditions they surely had not prepared for.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27304459

FEMA tricked them to begin with by saying to store 3 days food and water while knowing damn well they could not adequately respond to a widespread disaster in that short time.
 Quoting: Ralph--a house dog

FEMA tricked them??? If they are so stupid and incompetent they need FEMA to tell them what to do they don't deserve any better.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 26957116

Have at least 1 months supply of food and other necessities. Don't depend on government, they are not your friend.
 Quoting: INK3

I know that, having been through many hurricanes and a few blizzards but FEMA's advice was not directed towards you or me or anyone else who knows better or has sense enough to prepare as best they can.

It was directed to average sheeple who hadn't experienced such events but who trusted their government to tell them the truth. And they lied to them.

Are those people ignorant, unaware, dumbed down by flouride, the educational system? Too overwhelmed with making a living, raising kids, struggling with the rising cost of everything, or perhaps an illness, disability or old age? Some certainly are.

Many suffer from the 'Normalcy Bias' and can't entertain the possibility that something really bad could happen to wreck their world and are unable think about it.

The point is that FEMA is heavily funded and charged with a job to do and as far as I have noticed, they don't do it very well at all.

If this had happened in CANADA (which it will soon) we wouldn,t sit online saying "oh my this is terrible"
We would start blowing shit up.....
Like really blowing shit up.....
Only a fool dosn't know that they arer NEXT.....
You need to do some thing more than talk......
Oh ya "this could never happen to me"
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27375240

omg, are you serious?

I lived in Canada...at least on the east coast, no one got angry about ANYTHING

nothing...you couldn't get two canadians to agree about anything, and they are terrified of their government

I saw no one willing to stick their neck out for anything, and they seemed terrified to talk about anything controversial or political

Maybe its different where you live, but what I saw was depressing apathy
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 14348632

Not true. Canadians are anything but a fearful bunch. Although we have our issues with our government were doing much better then the majority of the world. Canadians are very easygoing. We live and let live.
 Quoting: Meligrove

maybe in your neck of the woods, but I spent nearly 10 years in Nova Scotia, and it was near impossible to get anyone interested in taking action on anything...from skyrocketing electric rates to GMO foods, to hospital closing and ER wait times to the surreal eminent domain seizure of a family farm to give to a foreign mining company

I have been politically active all my life, and I know in places like NY, Montana, VT, TX, people get pissed and organized. You can at least get them to talk about the problems and they tell you what they think

In my part of Canada it was like pulling teeth to get anyone to share their opinion (unless it was to bash the US, that they were pretty quick to be vocal on, I guess Americans is one of the last groups not protected by political correctness...)

Now it could be the area I was in...perhaps Toronto and BC are different, just as CT is different from NV

Wherever you live, it is important to not play ostrich and think the problems will just go away by themselves...

 Quoting: IssueX

I agree that many don't share their opinion and quite frankly i don't blame them. Politics is a game that brings a large amount of division. Some Canadians are smart enough not to overwhelm themselves with things like this. Ive been on GLP for a long time and all these people say "lets make a change" or "people are starting to wake up" and it never happens.

Ive been into Politics a long time and its depressing and for speaking my opinion on it I've lost some friends and opportunities. There is much more to a person besides their political view. We see how worked up Americans get with politics and don't see it as beneficial.

Things get overwhelming very quick when you "open your eyes" Its depressing when change is always "soon" but never comes. Sometimes i wish i could be asleep again where i valued the enjoyment in life instead of surrounding myself with negativity of current things in this world.

If something catastrophic happens i know Im already prepared yet i spend hours on here researching stuff that doesn't add any value to my life.

lol sorry, ended up writing a wall of text.

I looked on zillow.com at the prices of houses for sale in that town. They are mostly over $500,000. This is of course left-over data from before the storm (it's pretty funny to look at a picture of a pretty $1.3 million waterfront house and realize it is surely no more), but it tells us that it's at least a middle-class place. How could you be living in a house worth over $300,000 and not be called middle class?

Maybe they didn't have private flood insurance. Or maybe they did, but it's actually Federal flood insurance sold thru private companies, which is how I am told they do it. And maybe that Federal flood insurance's solution to this problem is to fall back on the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Do you have any specific knowledge adequate to answer my questions?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27304459

You want to show me the $300k house this loser on disability owns??? Tell me the name of his insurance agent??? You're saying he has money for a $300k house but no money in savings to find adequate shelter for his family??? This man is a failure as a husband and father and he's blaming FEMA.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 26957116

For what I know people who "own" a house have the least disposible income: most of it goes to mortgage, maintenance and taxes.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27142624

Then they were stupid and greedy and overbought for their income. Qualifying for a mortgage doesn't mean one can afford it.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 26957116

The criticism is endless. I doubt anyone could measure up to your armchair hindsight. The fact is they were forced to move out of their homes and they cant return because the infrastructure is damaged, and returning service is dangerously delicate work. People will fall through the cracks by chance and bad luck no matter. In a disaster that should be taken into consideration, for govt planning and for citizens extending a helpful hand or at least some sympathy.

We stood and talked in the cool morning air a short distance up the road after security at the front gate threatened to have our cars removed outside the entrance to what Sotelo’s identification tag calls “Camp Freedom,” even though it more closely resembles a prison camp.

“Sitting there last night you could see your breath,” said Sotelo. “At (Pine Belt) the Red Cross made an announcement that they were sending us to permanent structures up here that had just been redone, that had washing machines and hot showers and steady electric, and they sent us to tent city. We got (expletive). (Fucked)

“The elections are over and here we are. There were Blackhawk helicopters flying over all day and night. They have heavy equipment moving past the tents all night.”

No media is allowed inside the fenced complex...

They bought the home not to live in, but to double and triple their net worth because their house should have been worth 2 million by now. Well, it backfired.

Most folks today can't even afford homes at the lower than 2008 prices they are at right now.

Re: Bitter cold inside a disaster shelter...."We got f--ked!"
"As Sotelo tells it, when it became clear that the residents were less than enamored with their new accommodations Wednesday night and were letting the outside world know about it, officials tried to stop them from taking pictures, turned off the WiFi and said they couldn’t charge their smart phones because there wasn’t enough power."

how come the locals don't take these people in until their homes are restored?

AC when homes were flooded in Manitoba Canada 2 years ago, those houses needed so much renovation, and the contractors were so inundated that there are still some people who aren't in their own houses.. add months, and for some years of mold growth in those houses, that the original houses had to be torn down and new ones built..

I'm not at all sure these victims of Sandy will be in their own homes next year, never mind before winter truly sets in.. and as I pointed out, those houses that got wet, are, as I type, growing mold. So restoration becomes far more difficult.

I'm afraid the people, in those tents or shelters, whatever you want to call their current habitat, are not aware of what could very well be a multi-year restoration process ahead of them.

Re: Bitter cold inside a disaster shelter...."We got f--ked!"
OK I live literally 2 minutes away from "Camp Freedom" aka Monmouth Park Racetrack, and I take issue with this story.

Yes, it has been bad here in NJ, and yes, it does suck that this guy can't get back to his home in Seaside, but there are many other places he (and everyone else in need of help) could go for free food and shelter. So many organizations are here helping us, it is truly unbelievable and gives me hope for humanity to see how many people from all across this great nation really do care and step up to help when needed.

For this guy, who has a working vehicle as someone else pointed out, to bitch and moan about the temporary shelter the state (NOT FEMA) has provided him is unjustified. Yeah, it sucks, but lots of people are still freezing in their homes with no power and no ability to charge their smartphones either, and somehow they're all managing. This was an unprecendented disaster for this area, and for anyone to think everything will be back to normal in less than 2 weeks is absurd.

I'm all for helping those in need (I'm actually somewhat of a liberal believe it or not), but there needs to be SOME personal responsibility. Simply acting helpless and ungrateful makes us all look bad, and is disrespectful to the plethora of volunteers and organizations who are here doing so much good. He is literally surrounded by help from other sources, he just needs to leave the tent and actually seek it. That said, I do truly feel bad for the elderly and disabled people stuck there who have no other means of seeking help, and hope they get transferred to a heated shelter asap.

And to any fellow GLPers who have friends or family here helping us, this Jersey girl offers my sincere thanks hf
