I've been there numerous times and always to other places in the island away from the metro area and find it friendly and proud people. As far as 51st state, it won't happen because the governor that supported statehood lost his bid for reelection. Furthermore, the majority vote was just over 50% which means nearly half are not wanting statehood. |

Their unemployment is nearly 14% and that's over half a million more people on the government dole that you and I would have to pay for. The costs of setting up government infrastructure would no doubt be astronomical. I can think of a lot of reasons why a Puerto Rican might want statehood. But I can't think of a single benefit to the United States. What would we get back from Puerto Rico by giving them statehood? What would they contribute to our nation, and would it come anywhere near to balancing out what it will cost? It sounds like you're in favor of statehood for Puerto Rico. Why? I'm very curious to know the reasons behind your opinion and how you think this would benefit the United States. |

We fight in wars for the USA, WW1, WW2, Korean, Vietnam, Iraq, Afganistan wars, etc. We have been in all and Puerto rivans have died in combat for the US. Also Puerto Rico does have resources a major contributor in nickel and other metals. So I could see why they want to be 51st state. I see a lot of single minded, racist people in GLP. You guys just need to worry about yourselves. |

With the rest of the US becoming increasingly bi-lingual the Spanish Language difference is quickly retreating into the background as one of the major stumbling blocks to union. The real issue is whether enough of them are FOR it so that those that are against it give up their dream of Independence? If not then the US could have to deal with an internal terrorist threat that was real, not the make believe one where the FBI is having to induce people into plots against the US by first setting them up and trying to get people to join in. At the moment Puerto Rican's are considered US Citizens with all the privledges that come with that, but have an advantage on other issues and costs that those in the US itself don't have. The biggest thing they don't have are US Senators or Congressmen ... but considering how disfunctional those institutions are at the moment I am not sure it is a negative. Personally? ... I think the vote should be at least 60% FOR union (2/3 better) ... so that the internal opposition has received a clear signal that most of their neighbors REALLY want to join the US as a state. |

I don't see Republicans holding this back, it benefits both parties to have a 51st state, Puert Rico would then be able to participate in presidential elections and would have electoral votes assigned. Only way I could see the Republicans not wanting this is because PR would be a largely democrat supporting state (cuz they don't know any better sadly, and yes I can say that because I am puertorican myself.) "the only limits we have are the ones that we set for ourselves.." I provide analysis on a myriad of int'l issues...if you don't like my opinion...I don't care I'm not here to please you. |

They did not become US citizens even if they might have wanted to. You have nickel which you sell at the market price. But you would have vast numbers of people on welfare and food stamps. Cost/benefit it just doesn't work for the rest of us at this time. |

Since PR would be Democrat, it would hurt the Republicans not help them. This is very clear. I would hope the House would have the gumption to block it. It seems to come up every so often, but US approval need not be automatic. Of course Obama supports it. He's a Democrat. |
