Can anyone with knowledge of art/science/mythology please help identify an unusual picture for me?
I was in the waiting area of an office this morning (that I now have no reason to visit again) and there was this incredible picture that fascinated me.

I thought I could google the key themes later and find it and the artist but I'm not having any luck doing it that way.

It was a drawing in simple black and white very much in the style of leonardo da vinci's incredible anatomical drawings.

It is of a man and he is kind of squatting and facing to the side and he is playing what looks like a cello or double (upright) bass instrument but that instrument is actually part of his torso. When you look closer you can see that everything in the picture is kind of multiple things depending on how you look at it, like Escher only not many straight lines and repetition.

The man's hair is actually a lizard or two (large ones like iguana's or gila monsters, not tiny gekkos) and on his limbs are the faces of old men, God maybe? it is seriously bizarre and interesting.

In the top right of the picture there are three stones/rocks hanging from three pieces of rope.

I would be incredibly grateful if anyone could post a pic or a name because I have to know more about this picture and what it means.

thanks

what period or movement does it belong to?

have you looked at hieronymus bosch's work?

dali?

kahlil gibran?

william blake?

goya?

has the picture been around for long, did you see it online?

thanks for your reply.

I do not know the movement but it looked more like a beautifully drawn medical/anatomical picture rather than an artwork. It looked old, like a da vinci and the instrument/cello thing was not a cello the head of the instrument was a strange shape and not like a modern cello. there was a lot of detail in what was quite a small print maybe 12"x6"

I am pretty sure it is not by those artists you mentioned but I am grateful for your attempt to help me

I would hazard a guess it has something to do with cronos /saturn, or a satyr. the three stones from rope being past present future, cronos ate his own son to represent the perpetuation of time, (the faces in his arm might be symbolic of this) and the lizards/serpents can sometimes be identified with him

Re: Can anyone with knowledge of art/science/mythology please help identify an unusual picture for me?
thanks for the links and ideas.

the men's faces aren't superimposed on his arms like tattoos - they are his limbs! the sinews and tendons and muscles are the lines and features of an old man's face.

also I now remember more, on the man's thigh/buttock area there is something about angles and degrees as if to explain the dimensions of a man's frame (going back to vitruvian man?) and although he is squatting and you can't see his genitalia, there are symbols on his outer though to represent these - sort of like a cross section so you can see what you cannot actually see.

the lizards on the his head though, that must mean something to somebody.

thanks for your input but it's not Dali.

it's more like the illustrations to dantes inferno or miltons paradise lost crossed with da vincis medical dissection drawings.

lots of symbolism, lots of technical perfection and lots of sheer pure art and imagination, everything is multiple other things. it was crazy.

I googled cronos and saturn extensively and came up blank.

I'm thinking of going back there in 2 weeks to find out what it was.

the drawing was not signed. I think it was from a book because there was some text material to one side but that was obscured from where I was sitting.

So as it happens the need arose for me to visit an office very near the one with the mysterious picture. I managed to get in and take a photo but there was no-one there who could tell me anything about it and as you can see it is not signed.

Re: Can anyone with knowledge of art/science/mythology please help identify an unusual picture for me?
there are so many fantastic artists you will never know the names of, because the ruling elite love to tell you how great modern art and tell you that Andy Warhol is a great artist.

It is their way of telling you to eat shit, they believe you don't really know the difference between shit and filet mignon when it comes to artistic appreciation.

You assume because it is very good, it must be famous. There are plenty of fantastic artists who are not famous, and plenty of horrible artists who are famous.

I have asked here specifically because some posters/members know more about less 'well known' topics/people.

oh well at least you agree it is good...

and you also bumped the thread for me.

here is a cropped version of the picture in slightly better quality (I know it's not perfect/slightly blurred at the bottom, the picture was behind glass and I had very little time to shoot it)

I've just noticed at the top of the picture on the border/frame thing to the left of the three hanging stones it says:

AMOUR NON-EUCLIDED

so this relates to non-euclidean geometry in some way

strange picture indeed. Is that a woman's pubic area just in front of the knee of the kneeling man, and is that depicting an autopsy of sorts?
