Some people can leave they chose not to.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24758892

There's no where to leave to dumb shit. They won't allow people to go back to their homes....even the homes that have little or no damage. Read the report.

By the time they are allowed to go back home, their homes will be robbed of everything valuable.

This is a good example why people should make their own preparations and stay away from the bureacratic control systems. Once you leave your house or evacuate, your ass belongs to the system and the system sucks.

Take a look at Haiti 2 years later...it's hard to imagine it could suck any worse than before the EQ but after 10's of billions of $...it's an all out cluster fuck.

It's no different in the USA. The same type of NGO's and Gov't bureaucrats steal the money and take advantage of the sheeple.

All the people who say those suffering after this just didn't prepare ... are you prepared for every possible disaster, or two or three of them on top of each other?

This was extreme winds / extreme winds / with a snowstorm right after.

You should try it, and I do somewhat hope you have the opportunity.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27304459

Uh. You get in the car (or call a cab) and drive until you find an open, fully staffed resort with a full service restaurant. You watch tv, surf the Internet, swim, until services are restored.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 26957116

Traffic in NYC was impassible for a while, gridlocked.

What if you don't happen to be able to pay for the resort, and your whole life is tied up in that house that is now soaked and you had the crazy idea of protecting it from the looters you expected would come?

Services might be restored in 8 months and your job is gone. Could YOU afford the resort that long? No but your mom's still-dry basement will protect you as it always has.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27304459

We're talking about those in the FEMA camps? I have friends in NY who are just fine (even after going a week w/o electricity). If its going to be eight months before services are restored, they probably need to move and get another job. If your whole life is tied up in a house, you have more problems than a FEMA camp. And what about insurance? Are none of these people covered? And no savings? Then they have been living beyond their means and wallowing in a FEMA camp is the consequence.

In an earlier post I erroneously identified the tent shelter as being in Lakewood (due to a quote from the guy in the article), it's actually at Monmouth Racetrack, which is even classier because they sure wouldn't let million dollar horses live in tents in the winter. I think the horses actually go to Florida during the winter.

''There are as many as 40,000 New Yorkers who need shelter from the one-two punch of extreme weather events, according to city estimates.

On Staten Island alone, about 5,200 people applied for temporary FEMA housing, but only about two dozen people have been successfully placed, federal sources said.''

Wow, a whole two dozen people have been placed. Those fema folks must be working real hard. Jeez, a kid could do a better job than that.

Living within your means IS having enough for the unexpected.
If necessary, you work two or even three jobs. Or live with family. Take in roommates. If thats not feasible, you sit in a FEMA camp and take minimum grade handouts like any other charity recipient.

Once the banking system collapses, your savings and property will be impounded...and you and your family will be carted off to a FEMA camp in your local region. They didn't spend $4-6 Trillion building 1200 FEMA camps because they are thinking of ways to provide for us. They built them to control the middle class after society fails.

At first when I read this I just kinda passed the post by..... but after reading some of the posts from people who refuse to believe that the government would allow this to happen I think you are actually on to something.

This has opened the doors for them to pretty much do anything. They now know that the mainstream media will protect them at every turn and that most Americans are to brainwashed to care or do anything about it.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7119213

I talk with very smart people who absolutely refuse to believe what is right in front of their eyes, no matter how many times they see it. There's some kind of cognitive dissonance going on. It really is a horror, finding out who runs the world, and the lengths they're willing to go to to get and stay in power, and get their sick kicks. But just because something is horrible doesn't mean you should ignore it. That way, it just gets WORSE!

We had a "nor'easter" here yesterday which basically dumped just a few inches in the coastal communities and a bit of rain. FEMA immediately shut down operations at 1pm in S.W. CT. You got that right.

Other american citizens worked until 5pm and drove home in the heavy snow. But FEMA deemed it too dangerous to stay at the operations centers.

I would not think of comparing my situation to that of someone who was flooded.

I don't know how the flood insurance works in all details, but I am aware that it was Federal flood insurance sold thru private insurance companies. Didn't know that did you?

But we're talking about a storm and these people who were totally UNPREPARED have no right to complain. If you have no insurance and no savings, no friends nor family who can or care to help you, then you will sit in a FEMA camp. Period.

The whole country has been living beyond it's means...where the hell have you been the last 15 years?

Once the banking system collapses, your savings and property will be impounded...and you and your family will be carted off to a FEMA camp in your local region. They didn't spend $4-6 Trillion building 1200 FEMA camps because they are thinking of ways to provide for us. They built them to control the middle class after society fails.

Read this FEMA re-education camp manual.

Not everyone. I know plenty of people who have savings. A total societal collapse? Gold, silver and canned goods will help I suppose. But we're talking about a storm and these people who were totally UNPREPARED have no right to complain. If you have no insurance and no savings, no friends nor family who can or care to help you, then you will sit in a FEMA camp. Period.

I'm sure there are many people who are toughing it out and who were prepared as best as they can. I'm from North Dakota and when the Red River (normally 60 feet across) ran 25 miles wide, we all chipped in...even to save the cattle.

The federal Government was asked to supply a few firestations with boats and otherwise was asked to stay out of the way.

Regulations, FEMA thumb twirlers, Fed bureaucrats, and outside people sent to the area had to be taken care of by the locals because the Fed 'rescuers' themselves came unprepared and needed help.

When a disaster strikes it's the people in nursing homes, seniors, and economically challenged who get fucked and if we can't find a way to take care of them better, then our society is shit and will never be part of a great nation as it once was.

The every man for himself routine is not warranted in a small localized disaster. Wait till WW4 breaks out. We are already in WW3.

I'm not against helping those in need. What I'm against is the thing that passes for a man in the linked article complaining that the FEMA accommodations weren't to his liking.
