All the people who say those suffering after this just didn't prepare ... are you prepared for every possible disaster, or two or three of them on top of each other?

This was extreme winds / extreme winds / with a snowstorm right after.

You should try it, and I do somewhat hope you have the opportunity.

Uh. You get in the car (or call a cab) and drive until you find an open, fully staffed resort with a full service restaurant. You watch tv, surf the Internet, swim, until services are restored.

Traffic in NYC was impassible for a while, gridlocked.

What if you don't happen to be able to pay for the resort, and your whole life is tied up in that house that is now soaked and you had the crazy idea of protecting it from the looters you expected would come?

Services might be restored in 8 months and your job is gone. Could YOU afford the resort that long? No but your mom's still-dry basement will protect you as it always has.

We're talking about those in the FEMA camps? I have friends in NY who are just fine (even after going a week w/o electricity). If its going to be eight months before services are restored, they probably need to move and get another job. If your whole life is tied up in a house, you have more problems than a FEMA camp. And what about insurance? Are none of these people covered? And no savings? Then they have been living beyond their means and wallowing in a FEMA camp is the consequence.

I was 10 days without electricity and there are still 2 large trees blocking my driveway, broken in half by winds unlike any I've ever experienced including a Cat. 3 hurricane I was in before, and I think you're an ass. I would not think of comparing my situation to that of someone who was flooded.

I don't know how the flood insurance works in all details, but I am aware that it was Federal flood insurance sold thru private insurance companies. Didn't know that did you?
