I'm not complaining about how the tents were run. Given that they had tents with insufficient heaters, I'm sure the staff did a fine job.

I am complaining that the people were moved OUT of a heated building INTO insufficiently heated tents. And lied to to get them to do it, because nobody in their right mind would expect to be told to do such a thing.

The story is reported multiple places, though it all seems to stem from the same story. But again there IS a pic.

Wall Street area was not affected by the storm. Also, they are not homes. People just work there.

My question is... why don't these people do what they did in Egypt?

Band together block off the street, and don't let anyone in that can't show an ID that they live in that street, or are being escorted by someone that lives on that street.

BTW I'm in the affected area and just got thru 10 days without utilities (except for Verizon phone/internet/TV!) which I therefore provided myself with a gasoline generator, and I got lucky that I could even get enough fuel for it and had just enough fuel cans already -- fuel cans were totally impossible to buy the first few days after Sandy.

So I am fully in mind of the difference between necessity and luxury. I am still in the recovery zone and have been providing the necessities right here. And a heated building of some sort is really a NECESSITY.

Contrary to the spirit of the 2nd Amendment, they would be totally out-weaponed.

Actually, that all sounds good to me. Fenced tent city = security. If somebody takes a picture of me or mine, I want to be fresh and not wearing the same clothes for days. Everything's going to be all right. They're moving in heavy equipment to try to get everything up and running. It was a hurricane named Sandy, by the way. As good as our disaster relief is, even in weakened times, there's no way they can do all of that in a snap of your fingers. You'll be back watching cable tv in no time.

Has anyone given any thought to the plans "your" community has for you if your home was destroyed by some disaster. What if there is a large population suddenly found without any shelter or food? Is there even a plan in place at the town level? Who makes those decisions? I want to find out in my town and I want to hear specifics...how many can be sheltered and fed, where, how, how long? Many of us have made preparations for our own families, but we have to acknowledge we are part of a community and what goes on there is important for everyone. Is there money going into disaster preparations? Let's see what exactly is being planned for us. Just maybe some questions asked now at our own town levels and on up, just might shine some light on needed changes.
