Why?

I know most Europeans hate Americans. It has been made clear to me and my family every time we travel to a European country.

We have been treated rudely even though we personally never did anything to them. The Brits were the very worst.

The Germans seemed to be nice and so did the Danish and the Norwegians.

I don't plan on spending of MY hard earned money on people who hate me. So I will travel to other countries from now on.

I find this hard to believe. Most Brits like Americans.

May I ask where you went in Britain?

We have also traveled to Norway, Rome and Spain and the Brits we encountered on the way were just as rude as they were in the Canary Islands.

sure its not you? i dont know any of my fellow who hate americans. brits (and i mean not the sort you find on here who can be as rude as they like in safety behind the laptop) have no truck with americans

ridiculous generalisation. there are rude people in every country. i find many french people unbearably rude, but i wouldnt generalise and say ALL french were

although the canary islands, and spain in general, are full of chavvy imbreds. try somewhere a bit classier

No, I don't think we did anything to deserve the treatment we received.

Anyway, if you were sitting next to me in a resort here in America and I heard your accent, I would probably buy you a drink and be genuinely interested in what you had to say, where you were from, etc.

I know you aren't ALL the same. I'm sure it was the "type" of Brit that visits such resorts.

I have some British friends online that I've known for 10 years and they are wonderful folks who I would love to meet.

They are obviously of Irish heritage who wanted to come back to the isle. Nobody else would.

Don't pissed me off dude. I go to McGurks in St. Louis, MO. to listen to your contemporaries flown over here to entertain us. I'm sure they bring my dollars back to your country to support it. STFU.

Yes, some of us Americans are obnoxious, I get it. I travel sometimes and am embarassed by my own people too on occasion.

There are a few good, decent, educated Americans, but they do seem hard to come by anymore.

We seem to have overlooked something here, Eire (Republic of Ireland) is a Sovereign state, and has been for a long time. Northern Ireland is considered part of the UK, but ultimately should be reinstated to the original 32 counties of Eire.

It's sad to hear that your experience of Brits has been a negative one, however the majority do not have anything against US citizens, most people on the planet (Other than it seems a good number of US citizens) have issues with US foreign policy. US and European culture is very different, a lot of (Especially the younger) US citizens come across as 'Brash' and inconsiderate, but that is a small part of what is seen by the rest of the world as the 'Flag waving - home of the free, land of the brave' we think we are better than everyone else, brigade.

My opinion is I take people for what they are, if you are brash and inconsiderate I will distance myself from you. The US has not created a culture of any substance, other than from what is seen from the outside world as McD's, Hollywood and Invading other nation states.

My opinion for what it's worth hiding

We went to 6 of the Canary Islands. There were mainly Brits at each resort we went to. They were very condescending and rude to us, on purpose. I think they did not like the fact that we were at the places they "Holiday" at. My Husband and I were very polite to everyone. They rolled their eyes at us. Plugged their ears at dinner, even though we spoke in hushed tones. It was awful.

I was actually looking forward to chatting with the people we met on each Island. I understood that there would be a lot of British and Germans. The Brits showed nothing but disdain for us and even turned their noses up at us if we sat next to them.

It was very disheartening. I was excited to talk to the Brits and hear their stories. Instead, we were treated like trash.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25902452

I see what your problem was.

These kind of holiday destinations are jam-packed with drunken, obnoxious, Brit-chav scum.

I would also most certainly avoid any "popular" destinations in Spain, and Greece, if I were you.

Why not actually come to Britain itself (even London, which I wouldn't visit if you paid me)?

Seriously, there are local accents in the UK that I find very hard to follow, even though English is being spoken.

I don't go hating on people because of their accents...that's simply immature and prejudiced. If you have Americans in your town, wouldn't that mean your town is earning some tourism dollars? I'm always happy to hear people from overseas here and I really try to be pleasant as I hope they are enjoying their trips and like our city. Life is too short to harbor such negative feelings.

Whenever I hear a voice with an Irish brogue, I listen a little closer and think of all the wonderful things I love about Ireland: the people, the music, the dances, the picturesque countryside, the fighting indomitable spririt, the beer, the Irish coffee, and the sheer romance of the place.

I also think about the many, many Irish who left their land and came to the U.S. after the potato famine and worked hard to provide for their families and helped build our nation.

I am proud to have a bit of Irish blood (Kelly and Patton in me.

God bless the Irish, now and always.

Why you ungrateful bastard, just because us paddies didn't grow up by you doesn't mean we're not paddies all the same. You've got brothers and sisters here. Not our fault your grand daddy was too pussy to try a new land when we were running out of potatoes.

I have thought about accents on here. Like I will type with an English accent and then realize most people are American. Sometimes I have recited my words with an American accent but its an effort for me. Feel free to speak with an English accent whilst reading a post. My American cousin ITs

Come on, don't be mean, OP.

Most Americans love the Irish. A sizable portion of the American populace has a considerable dose of Irish blood in their veins. In fact, there are currently more people of Irish descent in America than there are in Ireland.

Americans of Irish descent cling fiercely to their Irish heritage. I believe this is due to the persecution that the Irish once suffered in America. It caused them to stubbornly dig their heels in and take pride in everything they've accomplished despite the deck being stacked so heavily against them.

It also created a tight bond between them. They survived and thrived by sticking together. Americans of Irish descent identify so strongly with their Irish heritage that in their minds they are as Irish as you are, and they would have your back for no other reason than because you are Irish. Their loyalty to each other also extends all the way across the Atlantic to you.

Please don't be unkind to the Americans who visit your town. I have no doubt that the lion's share of them are Americans of Irish descent who have dreamed their entire lives of setting foot on Irish soil. They are there out of love and a deep longing that there are no words to describe.
