Alcoholics Anonymous is a cult designed to keep you in a zombie like state after you wake up from illegal drugs
My mother has been going twice a week every week for the past 25+ years.
As far as I know she was an occasional marijuana and Alchol user for the 5-10 years that she was with my father and she went to rehab when I was 2 years old. The coins she has which she carries everywhere she goes have triangles in the middle and they mean severything to her. She feels as if the literally give her strength. She met her husband at AA and if I have one negative thing to say about either a switch goes off inside it seems and she gets extremely defensive. AA catches people at one of the most vulnerable points in their lives and leads them to believe that if they make it through it that it was becaue of the organization. That is of they don't commit suicide first. AA seems to be sort of a catalist for many people who try AA. They install a lot of guilt in people and only further confuse some very lost people. I believe my mom was lost for awhile but it wasn't anything she would have gotten through had she not found AA.

AA is a way to trap people once they wake up from the haze of alchhol & drugs. They also encourage pharmaceuticals which further helps to keep people in a zombie like state. It seems to lead most people to the new age cults. As in the case with my mom. She feel into an even worse cult as a result of AA. Some group lead by a "modern day" saint named Thomas Keating. If anyone knows anything about him btw please feel free to share.

Re: Alcoholics Anonymous is a cult designed to keep you in a zombie like state after you wake up from illegal drugs
Sorry noodle, AA provides a stepping stone for those who need help from a group. Some get sober, learn to look at their faults and weaknesses and stay sober and clean. The key is looking at yourself and your part in your addiction. Some get that and go on to lead "normal", productive lives and no longer need a drug to make themselves feel good. Nor do they need meetings. Others enjoy the comraderie of the group and they stay there. They feel a connection to these new friends, something they may have never had before. From my experience there were few people who I believe were truly alcoholic. Most had other issues and alcohol/drugs were merely a symptom of deeper problems.
If Momma is staying clean and sober why are you bitching?
If she's still a nutball its not from AA, its her problem.
I went to meetings nearly every day for seven years or more. When it got to the point where I saw the nutballs for who they were I got tired of attending.
I stopped going around eight years ago, still clean and sober. The key for me was looking at my part and taking responsibilty for my actions.
There's a saying in AA that it takes ten years to get your brian back. I found that to be true.
If it had not been for those initial years and the friendships I found I really doubt I would have stayed clean. The after meeting, meetings at the local diner were like the bar room for me. We talked, carried on and had a lot of fun. It showed me that I could have a life and have fun without needing bar rooms and drugs.
If Momma's happy, let her be happy ....

This.

Let your mother lead her own life - you wouldn't like her trying to run yours.

Your mother sounds like a closet drinker who concealed her drinking well. You have no idea what was going on in her brain.

Live and let live....

It's a good place to go when you are totally beat by your drinking and want to quit, those people understand where you are coming from.

ohyeah

ps. It is inaccurate to say that AA encourages pharmaceuticals use. AA does not. Many counseling centers, treatment centers, and the like do encourage the use of pharmaceuticals, but they are not AA, and AA has no control over their policies. Some organizations will host AA meetings in their facilities, so it is quite possible to misunderstand that issue.

AA is a cultish religion. <---- that's a period.
I was a member of both AA and NA. Right here and now my story is too long to tell but I can say that I was never comfortable and always wondered when I would get some real, fundamental and applicable support or suggestions for my problem. Cease wondering, it doesn't happen. The suggestions are always go to a meeting, call your sponsor, and PRAY. The Big Book, AA text, is regarded as the Bible by the AA thumpers and that is nothing but insulting, controlling, religious dogma. The ONLY way to sobriety is by surrenduring our lives to a HP that can cure us. What a crock. It's offensive to atheists, agnostics, women, and many religions and that includes mine. Although I have faith in God, I did not believe that it was God that kept me sober. I was told to abandon my beliefs and seek out a HP that would keep me sober. In other words you can choose your God or HP, but you have to choose something. YOU cannot depend on yourself. AA wants all the credit.
I've since put over 1000 hours of research into the cult of 12-steppers, mainly AA. Studies show it increases binge drinking by 9 times. It has a deplorable, 95% failure rate, and shockingly members have a better chance of dying (29%) as opposed to getting sober (5%). These numbers represent only the 5% of people that don't walk back out the door within the first month after sniffing out the sinister ways of the cult. This is the stuff that isn't printed about by the Guru Puff Preachers. Also, it is a money making venture, a publishing comapany. So the sales AND the leftover basket monies go straight to the top. Even individual donations. Bill W. was nothing but a con-man that claimed to be Jesus Christ reincarnate. He wanted money and he got it, dying a millionaire in 1971. AA brainwashes people into believing that they are egoists, self-centered, and sinful. Without the program they would die or end up in prison/institutions. For the truth, people need to read other than the "Conference approved literature". Look at the facts and not the puff that gets spread in the news. Yes, AA instills guilt into people and makes them feel so awful about themselves it is common for members to relapse or attempt suicide. Sadly many are successful. AA doesn't do any studies and only relies on a text written over 70 years ago by non professionals. The stories in the back? Research those as well. You will find that many of them relapsed and left the program or died an alcoholic death. Save the arguments (pr AAs), it's nothing but circle talk and lies. I'd like to finish by saying that the judicial system loves AA, they send many felons including sex offendors into the fellowship instead of shipping them off to prison where they belong. This is do to lack of funds and the painstaking work of Marty Mann to convince the Government that alcoholism was a disease that victims needed to be treated for. Meetings are dangerous! Criminals bask anonymously in groups where vulnerable women and young people go for help. As we speak AA is on trial now, being partially responsible of the murder of a young woman by a criminal. For those that choose to go, please be careful! For those that don't want to go or don't like it, you are not "powerless". We all have the will to overcome the behavior of addiction. It's hard work but the last place to get support is in a group where they tell you that YOU CAN'T DO IT. ~Peace.

I have to join in this discussion as I am an AA survivor.

I'm grateful that the "program" taught me that I don't have to drink to be "happy".

Happiness is a state of being - it has nothing to do with whether you drink or not.

My take on AA these days is this... it is a boy meets girl campus...
full of wolves & sheep looking for someone to save them.

It's also full of people who want a handout, not a hand up.

I've stopped going to meetings. Still struggle with the "happiness" thing and suspect I always will.

Maybe that is what this life's lesson was ALL about. Just being.
I AM THAT I AM IN ALL THAT YOU ARE, IN YOU I LIVE AND MOVE AND HAVE MY BEING EVERMORE

As here in sweden..

Make no mistake, AA is just as addictive as alcohol, if not more.
I have seen a recreational drug user, ( a couple of times a month, weed ) turn in to this frenetic AA cult member. AA was the first thing she would think of in the morning, and what everything else had to be planed around.

I wonder where you found information that said that Bill W died a millionaire?

AA helped me when I couldn't stop myself and all meetings are different to a certain extent as everything is "suggested"

It was up to me to follow the steps at that time for back then I had tried many other ways of controlling my drinking but I had no success.

I found professional "advice" always condescending and fake in some way where the interaction with others with the same problem seemed to work for me.

I have seen some very "strict" meetings and I have also seen many who continue in their addiction who attend meetings and say they are "sober" so I cannot disagree with your statement regarding personal involvement and willpower.

As far as looking for real advice about personal problems I never got any of that from any professional for my problems outside of alcohol either.

I unfortunately agree that great care needs to be taken in the meetings as you are quite correct regarding people being remanded to AA even when they claim they don't have problems with alcohol.

It helped me but I learned that I had to be honest with myself and that is still a daily adventure for me.

AA = Bondage! Think about it...whether you're using or drinking or NOT using or drinking...you're STILL in bondage to drugs and alcohol!

No need for the 12 step...ONLY need the One Step = Jesus Christ!
God Is! We're not! Let's knock off all the nonsense!

Watch out for the people working the 13th step too. You have assholes who prey on new members to get sex at AA meetings. I spent a month going to AA meetings and saw three 13 steppers working the room.

You can get help there but be very careful.

Re: Alcoholics Anonymous is a cult designed to keep you in a zombie like state after you wake up from illegal drugs
My take . I attended meetings for about a year back in 1995 for cocaine, i realized that there are people who have other issues (overeating, drugs, sex, gambling, iphone ) who attend these meetings, yet when you get the microphone you say your name and that your an alcoholic.

The reason is that AA has such a higher rate of recovery (and fanatism) that other groups dont measure up to but you better be an alcoholic as there is less romantising as other groups do. There are heirachies in AA, most of your longtime dry drunks decide if you are worthy of being sponsored (in a way i dont blame them due to lack of compliance). You do your 12 steps, then if something changes in your life then you do your 4th step again (which takes months to do), if you dispute it, you get guilt tripped that you "will be out there again" or hit "rock bottom". And your always tired , irritable and discontent. If you attend meetings then you know what I mean...Incomprhensible demoralization and rigorous honesty.
I cant complain at the time it served its purpose. And it only cost $1 a meeting.pretty good price tag for no frills rehab,

But as time went on , you were expected to do several meetings a day and do service and conversations sound like a broken record, you always have to talk about your disease, i would change the subject and invariably would go back to when i hit rock bottom. But I guess it served a purpose. Also smoked a shitload of Camels (AA favorites).Any yes you have the 13 steppers, the freaks, the excons, the psychiatric patients, homeless, sociopaths, borderlines you name it. Now lets say the serenity prayer.....
