Anyone else see this star?
I was just standing outside star gazing. Looking at orion and a bright star just above it. Then a bright star to the south west of orion caught my attention. Was getting very bright then slowly faded and poof now its gone and right after that a shooting star went across the sky. Very nice to see. Anyone know what star would have been southwest of orion and extremely bright and disappear?

Could have been an aircraft that turned off its landing lights.

one thing it could have been was a "iridium flare"....caused by sunlight reflecting off a Motorola Iridium satellite....used for sat phone communication .....look them up and read about them here:

www.heavensabove.com it has a place where you put in your zipcode and it will tell you all the neat things you can see in the sky over your location....I use it to see when the ISS is overhead, if you have never seen the space station fly over, you are in for a treat

Re: Anyone else see this star?
Yes it did move slightly. I noticed it getting slowly brighter and slightly moving then it was the brightest star around then just started fading away and got very dim and was gone.

My husband and I have been watching it for a couple of years, and that spurred us to buy a telescope. I do not know what it is. I like the link the other poster provided, it may provide some answers.
