Could be because the Ron Paul movement was much bigger in 2012 than in 2008 and they just didn't show up to vote because the GOP screwed us.

I cannot believe we are still talking about Romney. Listen, for 5 long years the republican party bashed his candidacy openly to all who listened. Go back and look at the million plus polls/posts from people who 'anybody but romney'. And then all of a sudden this summer he is our savior? We did not. Romney got less votes than McCain because he underperformed McCains totals by nearly 2 million votes in the liberal strong holds, New England and the West Coast + Hawaii. In fact, for the five regions analyzed, Romney improved on McCains totals in every geographic region but these two. So stop crying about a stolen election. Also, across the red states McCain beat Obama be less than 5 million votes in '08. Romney took the traditional red states by 6.5 million votes. Romney's campaign was a good campaign in retrospect. He targeted the states he needed well and invested resources enough to improve his standing in most of the country. In the end, it just wasnt enough.
