I like playing MMORPG's, from time to time, but don't like the fact that they are all shifting toward the Free-to-play model offering optional items, upgrades, character bonuses, etc.. for money. What's even worse is that many of these item malls are lottery based, so you don't always get what you pay for..your basically gambling.

I feel like it's a gaming model that takes advantage of people with compulsorily behavior and gaming addictions. It also ruins the MMORPG's IMO because you can play your heart out, not spending money, and be pwnd by a lower level player who decided to "invest" $$'s...

Now, I'm not saying it should be banned, just saying why the hell is online gambling not legal if this type of stuff is?

I used to love to play poker at Full Tilt, until I no longer could, because the US gov't intervened. I did make a bit of money, and lost a bit.. probably broke even in the end, maybe a bit ahead. I had lots of fun and it's not the same playing with fake money... not for me.

I'm not sure where I'm going with this.. kinda of a mesh-rant of sorts.. lol

Does anyone know of any good MMORPG's that are Free-2-Play and do not have Item Malls or stores?

Does anyone think this is a gaming world conspiracy of sorts, to gauge gamers for all the money they can.. I'm sure it is..

Feenix is a good sized private server of WoW. It's WoW for free. They do have a small store but its small, mostly to help pay bandwidth costs.

The genre is going free to play because people are bored with it and its becoming splintered. WoW was lucky in that was the main game in town for a while and thus could channel the market. But then every thought they could do better and the market got flooded. Blizzard refused to update the game, so people left but nothing can take its place. The genre may have to take a break for a while. I bought guild wars 2 just do I don't have to pay a monthly fee. It's not my favorite, but its decent and free of the monthly charge.

Here is a good article about the "woes of cash shops" in these games.

It makes a good point..

"To summarize, cash shops should only offer shortcuts and cosmetic items. If powerful weapons or equipment are to be offered, at least give us alternative methods of obtaining them."

Stopped reading there. Way to over-exaggerate. I'm not one for cash shops, but very few are those that put the players who spend money at a genuine advantage.

Re: MMORPG's becoming F2P with Item Malls / Stores ... Is this not taking advantage of people w/ addictions. The same as online gambling?
I've got near 30 years of gaming experience, 6 as a software tester and I'm moving into development. Currently programming, which i'm quite good at. I've got an eye into making my own games (with obvious help, graphics etc).

They way things are going tho I see many of the big developers losing their fan base and buyers. If you take a look at Diablo 3, it was on of the most anticipated titles for millions of fans and when it dropped people played it for a while and then realised that there was no way of getting through the game completely without using the online real money auction house. People left in fleets, hundreds of thousands of people said a MASSIVE F'U to Blizzard and went and played on other games.

I for one will never buy a blizzard title again, same thing happened with Capcom, they released a title (SFxT) with downloadable content already completed and ON THE DISC when released. Now only a handful of people turn up to play it in tournaments and the game has been shunned by the fighting game community.

While developers are looking to fleece their fan base with quartely DLC, the way things are going people are turning away from it and finding many small developer arcade games and single playthrough titles far more rewarding for the price.

With Augmented reality not too far round the corner a new wave of gaming will hopefully knock developers into shape, but that is still in development.

If you want to look at why this is happening all you need is to look at how many REAL big developers and publishers have been bought out and now carry the banner of corporate sponsorship. EA, Activision and few others are really killing the industry.

A game model that exploits the weakness of humans.

Now where have I seen that before...
