Didn't come from nowhere, that article highlights the action caused by the Atlantic pushing on the north American Craton. The quake was on the backside of the Apps. meaning what?...IDK. I've driven down through St. Louis and into Atlanta Ga. and those mountains are so freaking nice to see and experience. Good times that was. Yeah, the Appalachian and Rocky mountains are awe inspiring. But we got to realize they didn't get there because the tectonic plates of the earth stood still. Basically the ground under the ocean is heavier, harder and more condensed because of the weight of the water. The heavy plates under the ocean push against the lighter, less condensed plates on "land" and push them up. Nowhere else for them to go. So the land raises and fractures and builds mountains and we get beautiful scenery. And some pretty heavy bumps along the way. Ever been to Yosemite and been up on a ridge, like standing next to Vernal falls looking into the valley and seen how the solid stone walls of the cliffs on each side are bent backwards from the weight of the glacier receding? And the white lines in the rock that appear in a fraction of a second from the pressure of the earth moving? Freaking amazing. |

They asked if I felt it here (western Kentucky), however I did not. Hard to believe it was felt across such a broad area, but apparently it was! Quoting: Anonymous Coward 17302104 I'm in the Chattanooga area. We felt it here. It was kinda odd b/c that isn't common here. ![]() Last Edited by cutetornadoF5 on 11/13/2012 12:16 AM *The more I know, the less I understand. I believe the method magnitudes are measured/interpreted was changed in 1985. Because of this change EQ's are now interpreted 1 point lower than they would've been before the change. If true, this quake would have been interpreted as a 5.3 prior to 1985. The previous record of 5.2 happened in 1980, well before the change took place. The link for historic EQ's in Kentucky is provided earlier in this thread.
