The Spiegel has a point. A lot of Germans love to backbite about Americans. I don't hate Americans, though. I have had too much contact with them over my lifetime. Most of them are nice, some are assholes - same in every country.

Our TV and newspapers are largely dominated by illusional leftists. Germany as such is more "left" than the US. Obama would be a right-wing conservative in our political spectrum. Even Angela Merkel is much more left than Obama. Of course the reporters of foreign mainstream media seldomly point that out - ours neither.

On the other side there is an ultra-right fraction here (you know, Luisport-alikes who love to hate foreigners, even fellow-Europeans). However, they are little in numbers and don't have noteworthy political influence.

I've been to Germany a few times and always had a wonderful experience. I've never been spit on in Germany for being American; I can't say the same about France.

Sorry to break this to the Germans [and I'm 1/2 German descent myself', but the U.S. isn't going anywhere, and well remain the preeminent global 'superpower' for the foreseeable future. I like most other Americans see the problems our country faces, and because the U.S. is so preeminent around the world, so don't Europeans, etc., But the news they get of the U.S. [I know this personally because I've lived over there] is OVERWHELMINGLY negative. The Euro left DESPISES the U.S., and the far right are nationalist who also enjoy schadenfreude at America's expense. In many place around the world, it's an easy thing for politicians to deflect negative attention away from them, their party's policies and blame America; most Europeans and others fall for this.

Another thing that causes A LOT of resentment both blatant and passive aggressive, is the very unequal military relationship between the U.S. and especially our close Euro allies. On the one hand, Euro politicians like the fact they can rely on U.S. military umbrella while using money that would have gone towards their defense elsewhere, especially their welfare states [Germany for example is very much a socialist country]. On the other hand, this reliance breads resentment, which is understandable and typical of human nature.

Finally, Germany's economy and future isn't really all it's cracked up to be. There's a lot of exaggeration surrounding notorious German efficiency and Germany's rock solid economic foundation.

Oh bullshit. I lived in France. The French are overwhelmingly cool people and like Americans. I NEVER had any serious problem as an American in France, AND I LIVED IN PARIS. Parisians are big city people, similar to New Yorkers or Londoners, and yes they are abrupt, but this has everything to do with the fact they're big city people, very little to do with anti-Americanism. And when you go to the countryside and smaller towns and cities, people are almost universally pleasant and polite.

I blame the British for brainwashing Americans into thinking the French are all anti-American. I encountered far more attitude about being American in the UK than in France or Germany.

The Euro media are in general voraciously and gratuitously anti-American. They are very nasty and often print and say really nasty things not just about the U.S. government, but about American people in general. This is primarily due to the influence of the far left, who hold dominant sway in Euro media and academia.

Germany IS on its knees, and its carrying Greece, Spain & Portugal on its back.
All of our economies will eventually implode, The U.S. has much more flexability than does Europe, let alone Germany. European countries are all in the same boat, like it or not.

I think basically they are just proud of their country, and why shouldn't they be. Germany has reconstructed itself after WW II in a way which is almost miraculous. So I suppose when they look upon the corruption and degradation of American society and big cities, they are reaching their own conclusions.

But all the same, there is obviously much self-irony in that article. They try not to be too deluded about themselves either.
