I and my family are conservatives, because we believe government is bloated and the money we pay in taxes never goes to the purposes that would most help our country

but make no mistake, we want to help our country. We'd just rather that the money go directly to the people who need it. This is the same reason I don't donate to the Red Cross or Save the Children, because most of the money goes to pay for overpriced salaries of their executives

if I send Miggy $25, she will receive ALL that money, and if just a few dozen people do that, she will have enough to feed her family for a few weeks

If i send Washington DC that $25 dollars, it will be a drop in the bucket, vanish into the cesspool and end up in the slush funds which pay the bloated salaries of DC staffers, lobbyists and the others who have turned the VA, MD area into one of the most overpriced places to live in the country

I grew up in New Hampshire, which was also Libertarian. We did everything there on a town by town level. We would meet at monthly town meetings, decide how to spend our town's money, and I remember often the parents deciding to send money to people in our town who were having hard times, to help them pay their heat bills or mortgages

It is very difficult to ignore a neighbor who is in need, because you pass them and look them in the eye and you see yourself if fate were just a little different

It is very easy to ignore some nameless stranger in a place you have never seen

That is why government has to return to becoming local and responsible for the people nearby.

Oh shut up! Miggy is a Senior Citizen, and has put in YEARS of work, and has had a hard life particularly during the last few years. She comes from my generation, which looked down on accepting any sort of "charity", so I'm sure that her back was up aginst the wall before she even looked into food stamps, and she most likely waited a lot longer than she needed to before she actually applied for them.

Come back in 40 or 50 years from now, I'll bet your attitude will have been changed quite a bit.

Don't listen to them.. time for like minded people take care of their own.. to hell with the rest, they're headed that way anyhow.

I for one hope to never need assistance -- but I have paid 100's of thousands to the government and if I ever become 'entitled' to receive them, Miggi and I will be standing in line together.

A few months ago I took my wifes aunt to the office in Houston that handles 'foodstamps'... there were 100 people there applying -- not one appeared to be American to me -- not one spoke a word of English... complain about that and you and I can stand together.
