Re: Safely Preserving eggs without a fridge.
...If there is much interest in this sort of subject I will try to do a couple of topics a week maybe. And if there were to be interest I could maybe do some on herbs for like health care.
Perhaps something on Tawing hides.....

Yes, please do post more topics each week. And thank-you for this one.

One question though: why do you have to wear gloves with mineral oil? Is it bad for the skin?

I love powdered eggs. You can get about 3lbs of powdered eggs in a can on Amazon for about 18 bucks. Don't know what kind of shelf life they have.

Re: Safely Preserving eggs without a fridge.
Yes, I did the standard disclaimer I use for my online store, and then some. While I did try to protect the board, I guess the mods just didn't want to take the risk.

Interesting about your family. My wife is a homebirth midwife, and I am a male apprentice. It was seeing how well herbs worked for her clients that got me turned on to medicinal plants and made me decide to go to herb school. The situation with homebirth in the US is appalling. For a while, my wife and I did some lobbying at the State level to try to make licensure fair, but we just could not compete with the state Medical Association. They had three or four pro lobbyists undercutting us the whole time. If you are interested, your state probably has a "friends of midwives" association. They are always organizing political actions and awareness campaigns.

IN our state midwifery is a felony now. I do have friends that are midwives in neighboring states.

So the mods do not want any herbalist thread at all then? Wow I would think as the prepper movement is so strong here they would at least want a few basics.

WOW! I had a midwife for one of my kids' births, would have actually liked a home birth but it didn't happen...I can't believe it would be a felony!

I am trying to decide for sure what topic to do next. And thank YOU I am glad you like the thread.

This link might help explain one reason my great grandmother told me hands off the mineral oil.

Powdered eggs are an important thing to have on hand in case of needing to leave and travel light. I am sad to admit I do not care for them just cooked However I would eat them if the need arose. They are great to cook with in a pinch. I am glad for you that you have developed a taste for them. I am also very glad for the price tip as that is much cheaper than I have found them. Thank you :)

I know and they do prosecute. Most of my family was born at home. I was one of the few that was not, but I was delivered by a veterinarian. But yes our state has made it risky for all involved as the way the law is written it could lead to the prosecution of someone just trying to help in case of an emergency.

Re: Safely Preserving eggs without a fridge.
Unwashed they will last on the self in a cool room for about 9 months.
 Quoting: Plenty Paws

Are you sure about that? 9 months seems a long time. I don't think I would eat a 9 month old egg.

And anyway, why do eggs have a use-by date of only a few days if that's the case?
 Quoting: Shoot straight Johnny

Yes, you can do that. My eggs have a shelf life of 9 to 12 months. I gather my eggs and some are very dirty, then I candle them for bad quality and hairline cracks and float them. I replace the natural bloom that is washed away with food grade mineral oil that you can purchase in most pharmacies. My eggs are stored in a cool place. 55 to 60 degrees is fine. I try to turn my eggs once a week, if not, once every two weeks is fine. I am a small flock producer and sell my eggs, I have never had a customer complain or had a call or return of eggs. I do ask my customers to float their eggs before use because the egg does have an air cell on the tip, this is what determines the grade of egg you have. The larger the air cell the less quality the egg. The air cell even with natural bloom or, mineral oil will continue to grow, this is why one should float their eggs before every use. A floating egg is a bad egg, air has entered through the pores which means that bacteria would have as well.
