Agree, very interesting. I just hope there are some good guys/gals in this plot and it's not just cabal factions double or triple-crossing each other (although that's good, too, with some popcorn).

from Nov. 10 story at [link to www.usatoday.com]

When Petraeus left the military and took the job at the CIA, Broadwell kept in contact with him and sometimes was invited to his office for events such as his meeting with actress Angelina Jolie.

So the photo op wasn't the first time Jolie was in Petraeus's CIA headquarters.

Also, found out Jolie became a member of the The Council on Foreign Relations in 2007. She gets around.

You don't lose your constitutional rights when you go to work for the gov't.

He didn't gain the right to claim the 5th. He may have lost executive immunity... That's only change...,

Oh and the subpoenas that have already been issued will no longer apply b/c the CIA Director was probably subpoenaed... So he won't testify at first hearing...

Anyone called before a Congressional hearing can be held in contempt... But you can't be held indefinitely - just till the end of the current congressional session...
 Quoting: DarbyDoom

You do lose some of them if you join the military. They could court-marshal him if he refused to testify.
 Quoting: Girl Genius

First of all, Petraeus is retired...

But bigger issue.. Active duty members of the US military do not lose their basic rights when they don a uniform...

Members of the US Military, along with all US Citizens, and many non-citizens for that matter, are afforded the basic protections set forth in the Bill of Rights.

The mechanism to assert those rights is different (different judicial system), the interpretation of the extent of those rights may vary because the of the different purpose of the military justice system, but the basic guarantees are inviolable....

Thus, while civilian courts are established under Article III and military courts are established under Article I, § 8, both systems are are created under, and governed by,the US Constitution.

For example, the 5th Amendment includes a "right against self-incrimination." In the civilian context, this is one of our Miranda rights. In the military context, it isn't called a Miranda right... it's some Article Right under the UCMJ... But the right remains...

Hmmm....I'm way too tired. I think I just revealed a little too much about my background....

This is not about an affair. This is NOT about Benghazi.

This is far bigger than Benghazi...

Wow, I didn't know it wasn't the consulate that was attacked. That guy wasn't really an ambassador, was he?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27394300

Is that a joke? I'm bad at detecting sarcasm, which is really ironic b/c I am extremely sarcastic...

Just in case you weren't joking -

Two US compounds were attacked that night...The CIA station and the US Consulate. There is no legal definition for the term consulate. It is an ancillary diplomatic mission (not the official embassy).

Before the NTC (Libyan Rebel Gov't) officially moved to Tripoli (from Benghazi), in October 2011, the US maintained a special mission to the NTC in Benghazi. It wasn't called an embassy (even after we recognized the NTC).

There were numerous security issues in Tripoli after the official move, so the NTC leadership often stayed in Benghazi... For this reason, the US needed to keep a diplomatic facility (call it whatever)....

The idea that Benghazi was safer than Tripoli was shattered when protesters stormed the NTC headquarters (and looted it) while acting NTC President MAJ (Mustafa Jalil) was trapped in the building. There are pictures of him looking out a window scared sh*tless as protestors/looters stormed the grounds. I heard the leadership hung out in Turkey for awhile after that...they were out of sight for a few weeks.

When they came back they were in Tripoli. Their offices and the new Libyan legislature (the GNC) are stormed weekly.

There is a good chance that Libya will split into several countries. If that is the case, the first new country, Barqa, will have Benghazi as its capital. So, it's - good idea to keep a Benghazi mission open...

Sorry to digress. I just wanted to say whatever you call it, there has been a need for a diplomatic office in Benghazi for the last almost two years now...

BUT the part about the CIA supplying weapons and fighters to Syria is correct.

cover up. he's under investigation for a botched military coup against Obama and had to resign to keep the scandal out of the public eye. the first stage of the coup was to frame bengahzi screw up on Obama, then nail him with an impeachable offense after the election. several high ranking officers including petraeus were involved but the feds figured it out before it was fully executed. this is why the Obama/bengahzi scandal has faded from the MSM or specifically Fox news who was also in on it. if it was real they would never have dropped it that easily and would now be all over the other networks.

It simply cannot be revealed. Yet it is all very reminiscent of the Sandanista thing... CIA Funding and Arming Rebels, etc....

There is definitely something in this story about Angelina Jolie. The media has reported two "out of place" snippets in the resignation scandal which referenced her name.

The first reports Petraeus sent a photo of himself and Jolie to Broadwell from his secure 7th floor (why that detail?) CIA director's office only hours after he or someone else took the photo. The story also mentions photos are not allowed at CIA headquarters, unless taken by the official CIA photographer.

The second media clip mentions that Broadwell was at Petraeus CIA office when Jolie visited. I checked old news stories and that meeting took place in January 2012.

The controlled media is publishing these little details for someone and it isn't us.

There is a rumor on the internet that Broadwell was about to "out" Angelina Jolie as a CIA agent. Could this be what the media is hinting at to insiders?

Do potential replacements tell us anything? AFP Article

CIA deputy director Michael Morell, promoted suddenly to acting director because of the Petraeus scandal, is now scheduled to appear instead.

The head of the Senate intelligence committee, Democrat Dianne Feinstein, told "Fox News Sunday" that Petraeus "may well" still be called at a later date.

One name being floated as a possible Petraeus replacement is John Brennan, the White House counter-terrorism adviser and a CIA veteran who has played an instrumental role in Obama's drone war against Al-Qaeda militants.

Others include Michael Vickers, undersecretary of defense for intelligence, and Congressman Michael Rogers, a Republican who heads the House intelligence committee.

More Replacement Speculation

Petraeus' current deputy, Mike Morrell, will step into his shoes as acting director. Morrell may become the next CIA director -- if there's nothing that could derail him during a Senate confirmation. But two former senior intelligence officials mentioned other candidates.

"The prevailing wisdom is that Mike Vickers wants this with all his heart and soul," a former senior intelligence official told AOL Defense. Vickers, now the Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence, is the legendary former CIA operative who led the war against the Soviets in Afghanistan chronicled in the book, Charlie Wilson's War.

However, Vickers may face opposition from the CIA's National Clandestine Service, said a third former senior intelligence official. "Vickers definitely wants to go back to the agency. But I'm not convinced the NCS guys would want him back," this source said, noting that the CIA's analysts would almost certainly welcome Vickers back with open arms.

The other candidate is Stephanie O'Sullivan, the principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence. She is DNI Jim Clapper's deputy.

Just as Petraeus faced perhaps not opposition but unease when he joined CIA, his replacement may face obstacles if not from a background with which CIA personnel are comfortable with. "Much of this," the third former official said, "will come down to who the organization will accept."

CNN Possible Replacements

Mike Morrell . . .

John Brennan . . .

Another possibility for the position: Jane Harman, the former congresswoman from California who is well-respected within intelligence circles.

While in Congress she served as the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, chaired the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence, and was a member of the Armed Services Committee. Although a social liberal, Harman was seen as a moderate on intelligence and defense issues. She voted for the war in Iraq and initially supported the controversial domestic surveillance program run by the Bush administration.

Harman left Congress to run the Woodrow Wilson International Center, but still speaks out often on intelligence and foreign policy issues.

Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence Michael Vickers is another name being bandied about. . . .

Another potential candidate is Mike Leiter, the former director of the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC). The Harvard Law School graduate spent six years in the Navy flying missions over Bosnia and Iraq. After a stint as a federal prosecutor, Leiter served as the assistant director of a presidential commission on weapons of mass destruction, and was later named deputy chief of staff for the director of National Intelligence.

Re: Petraeus Latest - "Shirtless" FBI Agent is Hard-Charging Counter-Terrorism Legend...
Excerpt from Vickers' Bio -

From 1983 to 1986, Vickers became the principal strategist of Operation Cyclone, the CIA covert action program to arm Islamist Mujahideen in order to drive the Soviets out of Afghanistan, something he called the "largest and most successful covert action program in the CIA’s history: the successful effort to drive the Soviets out of Afghanistan, which contributed significantly to ending the Cold War and facilitating the collapse of the Soviet empire."

Vickers and the head of the and Afghan Task Force, Gust Avrakotos, gambled that the Afghans could win if they were properly supplied. As a result, Vickers drew up the plans to arm and train a core group of 150,000 Afghan fighters.

The arms and supplies were funneled covertly through Pakistan, but Vickers became well acquainted with many of the Afghan Mujahideen fighters. He would eventually coordinate an effort that involved ten countries, controlled an annual budget of more than $2 billion and providing direction to forces made up of over 150,000 Afghan fighters.

In 1986, contrary to all expectations, Vickers decided to leave the CIA...

Operation Cyclone was a CIA program approved by Presidents Carter and Reagan. In 1979, Zbigniew and current Defense Sec. Robert Gates travelled to Afghanistan to ally themselves with Pashtun Drug dealers and certain outside "freedom-fighters" like Osama Bin Laden...

Anyway Operation Cyclone aimed to force the Russians to invade Afghanistan in response to a US presence in the Middle East. According to the Wikipedia Article on Cyclone, Between 1979 and 1989 the US government gave over a billion dollars to "militant Islamic groups that were favored by neighboring Pakistan, rather than other, less ideological Afghan resistance groups that had also been fighting the Marxist-oriented Afghan regime since before the Soviet intervention."

Let that sink in for a second. Yes, the wars are a sham. Yes, millions have died for nothing. Yes, the United States created the precursors to the Taliban and indirectly caused the 9/11 attacks. Yes, everything you know and believe is a lie....

President Jimmy Carter authorized the CIA to begin covert ops to get many types of assistance to the Afghan rebels in order to hinder the Soviet forces and their advancement through Afghanistan. This entire operation was dubbed Operation Cyclone.

A very similar movement happened in other Muslim countries, which brought contingents of Afghan Arabs and foreign fighters who wanted to wage jihad against the communists. Perhaps the most notable of these fighters was a young Saudi named Osama bin Laden, whose militant Arab group would eventually form al-Qaeda.

I completely agree...

Even if you believe the BS explanation on why the FBI investigated the CIA Director's personal e-mails, why would this become public?

Both the FBI & the CIA know (and do) plenty of things we never hear about...

Checking one woman's e-mail after another woman complains would take very little time. Once they realized that this woman was Petraeus's official biographer (so they had a legitimate reason to be exchanging e-mails) - it should have stopped. Presuming they had a legitimate reason to then hack into his e-mails, once they realized that no criminal activity had occurred, it should have stopped...

There was no whistle blower in this case....There was no reason we ever should have found out about this. I agree - This is not about an affair.

Nope - she was the excuse.

Abraham Lincoln fired McClellan b/c the old dinosaur could not adapt to modern battle tactics...

And even back then, the incompetent, but famous, old general was able to stick around & cause problems for Lincoln...

Imagine what it's like in today's modern world. The famous general, who is removed because he can't adapt, instantly becomes the pundit who forms public opinion. He's more dangerous on the outside than he is on the inside...

The modern battlefield has changed. We have a lot of dinosaurs out there. Some of them, like McClellan, are famous.

When was McClellan fired? After Antietam.... His dismissal was a turning point in the war....
