During his 54 days in charge, Mr Entwistle has also had to deal with controversy over the BBC shelving a Newsnight investigation into former BBC presenter and DJ Jimmy Savile, who police say could have abused as many as 300 people (read, children) over a 40-year-period.

As a result, former Sky News head Nick Pollard is examining whether there were BBC management failings following the Newsnight programme not being broadcast, Also, an inquiry has begun into the culture and practices at the BBC in the era of alleged sexual abuse by Savile. Another review is to examine sexual harassment policies at the BBC.

BBC Trust chairman Lord Patten, who made a statement following Mr Entwistle's resignation, said: "This is undoubtedly one of the saddest evenings of my public life."

He said: "At the heart of the BBC is its role as a trusted global news organisation.

"As the editor in chief of that news organisation George has very honourably offered us his resignation because of the unacceptable mistakes - the unacceptable shoddy journalism - which has caused us so much controversy.

Uh huh!! "Trust" chairman Lord Patten?

(not with my kids, thanks!)

yes

so this pedophile sex scandal was all a result of shoddy journalism. There was really nothing to it. Go back to sleep. Entwhistle resigns to admit they were "mistaken" about this whole sex scandal thing, "it's just a gay witch hunt" as Cameron says, and the whole thing gets swept under the rug.

Maybe the thread is dead, but without following the links at the beginning of the thread, and the strange video, one might get the impression that Entwistle is one of the suspects, and a few posters seemed to reflect that. But by following the links it appears that Entwistle is more a victim in this.

But probably the new BBC director will have an agenda to (try to) put a lid on all this.

FWIW, I also have a lineage that traces back to "blue-blood" ancestry in Wales England. My mother in fact is a respected genealogist and she has often noted how those older cultures were what today would be considered incestuous and pedophile. In other words, that was normal for them.

Case in point, one direct ancestor of mine -
Sir William Morgan, born 1560, Monmouthshire, Wales

He had 11 children by his (first) wife, Elizabeth Winter.

Among those offspring with his first wife was a John Morgan, most likely the father of pirate Henry Morgan.

But by his first daughter (second wife), also named Elizabeth, he had 12 more children, concurrently and from the same bed one might imagine, as those of his first wife. And this guy was a knight and respected figure of his time.
