Unemployed: need advice
I lost my job with a tech company doing technical support. I seem to be losing these jobs after 4-6 months especially call center environments. Here is my background:

1> bilingual french/english
2> majored in political science with IT minor in university after identity crisis during early 20s that involved plans to become police officer like my father, or teacher, or marketing specialist.
3> have eu/canadian passports

I only see my self working in customer support roles the rest of my life now. What should I do to break into another field that isn't call center related?

Re: Unemployed: need advice
I totally agree with you and thats why I had identity crisis in college. Nonetheless I graduated. I considered going to teacher's college.

Any job behind a desk is liable to be outsourced/offshored. Scary times.

Re: Unemployed: need advice
Get your CCNA certification. There is always a need for network engineers, and that is something that cannot be sent off shore as it deals with physical components and requires constant attention.

I'm working on getting it right now. Actually getting my CompTIA A+ cert first as it is much easier and I have a lot of experience with desktop support, should be able to get that in about 3 weeks then going to start focusing on CCNA. Hopefully I will have both certifications within about 3 months.

Network engineering is going to be the fastest growing occupation within the next 5 years. If you can get your CCIE eventually you will be in very high demand. Salary can be anywhere from 100k+ with a CCIE, but I hear it's a very hard test.

If you can market yourself as a consultant might work for you, I used to do consultant work in computer security or you can look towards a particular niche that might provide an income for example photo restoration. It might seem frivolous however as times become harder people enjoy a taste of nostalgia and connecting to their roots.

You have to evaluate all your skills and not just your education and look around you and see if you can fulfill a need in your area.
